Putting jars in the freezer

Is it okay to do that, or is it a daft idea? Is it an old wives' tale that glass shatters if kept in a freezer? Going on holiday for a week in a caravan on friday - will only have an icebox in the fridge. i thought about using a mix of bought jars and homemade, and had the idea of filling up some clean jars with homemade stuff and putting them straight into the icebox (should get quite a few in lying down shouldn't I?).

Put the stuff in freezer bags instead?

you can but you shouldn't put the lids on tightly and shouldn't fill them right up - the contents expanding is what makes them shatter. I've never broken one!

I used to do this, until I read the following:

"Baby food jars are not made for freezing. Glass that is not specifically manufactured for freezing has the unfortunate ability to crack, leave behind tiny, microscopic shards and fragments and also is prone to bursting."

Needless to say I stopped after that. I now use a mixture of Avent via disposable cups and freezer bags, both work fine. :)
