Not sure about starting weaning

I'm planning on putting pieces of fruit and veg on ds's highchair at mealtimes on a more regular basis, but I'm not sure if this is really OK. I'm thinking blw-ish but he's not 6 months yet. My dh got the highchair out of the loft earlier this week and ds has been sitting in it at the table with us for mealtimes. He's only 21 weeks though he sits quite well; perfectly well in the highchair.

Before sitting in the chair he sat on my lap and grabbed at my plate (a lot! He's teething) and then he made a grab for a sausage and on another day for a meatball - managed to get hold of both, though they were prised out of his hand quite quickly. He didn't try and put them in his mouth.

Anyway I put a piece of broccoli and some carrot in front of him yesterday to see what he would do and he ignored the carrot and threw the broccoli straight on the floor. He did the same with a piece of pear too. So I thought the food was just going to be something to look at, play with rather than eat.

Today I put a piece of orange in front of him, thinking it would be good to squidge around but not expecting him to chow straight down on it. He absolutely loved it - it was all round his face, the tray and some definitely went in his mouth - but now I'm worried that he's not 26 weeks yet (and it was citrus).

I'm not planning on starting him up on 3 meals a day or anything, but I think he's ready for a few bites/gums at mealtimes with us. What do you think?

I wouldn't bother personally as there's no benefit (unless you have been advised to start by a HCP) and it's better for their tummies to wait.

No we haven't been advised to start earlier. I started dd at 24 weeks - well she started herself by stealing out of my hand! - and she was very much how ds is at the moment. I'm not expecting him to sleep through, have less milk or anything, he's just grabbing at food left right and centre and I thought it might make for calmer mealtimes Grin
