Blw - the first month

Sooo dd is 6 months at the weekend but we have been offering bits of veg off our plate for a week at supper time- pretty much at her request!!

she has been having fun gumming and playing with it. I feel I should be doing more come 6 months and just wondering what things people found most successful in the first month of weaning.

She doesn't like the spoon or if I put food near her mouth but is happy to pick stuff up herself so I think blw will work best for her

Ooh, no helpful advice but will be watching this as mine at same stage. Having difficulty finding opportunity to offer veg at the mo as we're only eating after DS is in bed. (During day I'll usually only eat quick stuff like a sandwich or instant noodles, neither of which I feel ready to offer him yet).

I started blw ds about 10 days ago- previously had done the same as you. Really all I do is try and add a bit more variety and sit him properly in his high chair. Also offer food at times I'm eating or at least when i have a moment to sit up the table having a coffee even or eat more unhealthy stuff - actually i think it has made me eat a little healthier as i now have more fresh fruit and veg in the house. i am so sad i did a special shop to get cucumber, avocado, mango, breadsticks etc. I chop a load into the right size and keep them in pots so I'm not chopping the whole time.

We have definitely had some swallowing especially of mango which seems to be the favourite so far. I think the book says just to give them different things to choose from at each sitting. Breadsticks have also been a hit and he loves the crunchy noise they make :-)

Recently started BLW and popular so far have been:

Porridge fingers (basically really thick porridge)
Broccoli
Sweet potato (cut with crinkle cutter to help grip)
Spaghetti with tomato sauce
Meatloaf cut into strips
Jacket potato (bits scooped out to give to DD)

Have fun Smile

Have you found www.babyledweaning.com yet? Very helpful!

We've been at it a month now - still small amounts going in but it is surprising that there's more and more appearing in the nappy than I thought went it so take heart! Favourites are:

Banana/advocado on toast
Bread sticks
Pasta - no sauce - the really big hoops
Maltloaf
Tea loaf (BLW recipe I did - dried fruit in it)
Strip of roast chicken
Toast dipped in boiled egg
Bread stick dipped in yogurt
Chunks of cheese
Asparagus
Green beans
Baked beans and mash - had to spoon this
Apple flavoured Organix Oat Cakes
Carrot Organix corn snacks (look like wotsits)

Tried Cheerios and Shreddies on HV advice but actually they are quite sugary and she couldn't pick them up anyway. Read porridge on oat cakes is handy but so far she's not really into breakfast...

Be brave - it's really surprising what they can manage. We started when she nicked a piece of naan bread with curry sauce on it!

X

Sorry: Organix RICE not oat cakes!

Thank you for replies some fun things to try. I have bought the baby led weaning cookbook but just wasn't sure what would work well at first. Sounds like we should just go for it! I'm quite excited!

Oh, I have just been giving DS3 what we have. Made cottage pie today and he just scoops it up with his hand and eats it-well smears it around his face too! :)
Tbh there is no stopping him, if we are eating he just goes for it. He has toasties, buns, curry, pasta and sauces, soup-gets help with this obvs.
Can I recommend one thing- do try to sit together for meals. I made separate food for my older DC when weaning. DS3 is so much more comfortable around food, it really does make a difference IMO.
DS3 is 6 months btw.
