Weaning problems - refusing a second meal?

I am 3 weeks into weaning DS, I started at 6 months. He is doing really well with porridge and various fruits in it however I/we are struggling with a second meal.

He has his porridge after his morning nap about 9:30 and then I offer another meal at about 2ish, usually after a nap and at least an hour from a milk feed (EBF) However he just isn't interested - tries to lick off a spoon rather than open his mouth - it is usually some kind of veggie and fruit mush. Any suggestions as to why it isn't working?

I have tried offering pieces of food BLW style but he just squishes it in his hands and ingests nothing!

Any ideas?!

Am watching with interest. My DS is the same age and we have been weaning about 3 weeks. I give him breakfast at around 7 with his first milk feed, and he has a few mouthfuls. Any meal offered after that is met with a mouth firmly closed. I also gave him some finger food but he didn't know what to do with it. I am thinking of giving it a break for a few days and then come back to it?

We did BLW with dd, starting at 6 months quite often she just squished food and threw it around a bit. She was still having all her milk feeds so I tried not to worry and just let her get on with it. I gave her lots of variety and let her eat/play/refuse and she slowly got the hang of it. Three weeks in is still really early days!! Dd is 13 mo now and an amazing eater but she'll still refuse the occasional meal (indeed she did tonight!) but it doesn't seem to do her any harm, she seems to know what she needs.

I have started at 6 months, spoon feeding puree, she was not interested so gave her finger food, which was more successful. One month in, she eats anything while holding and chewing on her finger food. I give her a green bean to hold and spoon feed lumpy puree of green beans with fish and rice for example. I started with mid morning, an hour before BF, she would also eat around 5.30pm. Good luck
