Weaning, Gina Ford way

Was just wondering, is anyone following the Gina Ford structure of weaning? I've just started weaning DS, was wondering if it was ok to follow her routine? Seems like she's aiming to cut out the Lunchtime and tea time milk feeds by the time they are 7 months. Is that the standard aim?

I followed GF for weaning, though not to the letter, never could be bothered taking purees up to the bedroom to feed in the evening before bed, DS just had his milk. But we did cut out lunch time and tea time milk feeds by that age. But I don't think this is current advice, I think you are advised to give milk an hour before feeding, so milk consumption doesn't drop too quickly until they are 1. Having said that DS has always been a milk monster and still is aged 10, he loves his food and I found having GF tell me what to do worked well, I'm not that intuitive and had no idea how to go about weaning a baby! GF had him eating everything by about 7 months, purees and lots of finger foods, all food types.

Hi, thank you MilkRunningOutAgain. Guess will carry on but maybe keep in the milk feeds for a while.

As long as your baby is still getting the required 20oz of milk a day, it's fine to cut out these feeds.

I follow a loose Gina Ford routine, but I can't see that the tea-time feed is cut down...? My 9 month LO has a 7oz bottle at 7am, 2.30pm, and then a bedtime bottle around 6.30pm. He has solid food at 8am, 11.30am and 5pm. I cut out his lunchtime bottle about 8 months, but always gave it to him first before giving him solids at 11.30am. I cut it down gradually until he was just having 3oz at lunch, then stopped it altogether.

I agree with the PP, GF really helped me figure out what and when to feed, and at 9 months, LO eats a huge range of food.

Yes, Gf seems to have got this a little wrong. Milk should be the main source of nutrition until 12 months, so milk feeds should not be reduced at 7 months and milk, whether you are bfing or ffing, should be given an hour before solids.

Once Lo is one you can offer milk after solids and continuing bfing or swap the formula for 300ml of cows milk per day.

Have you read the Mn info on weaning too? It's got some useful info including a helpful timetable.

Hi. Thank you for your advice. I'll have a look at that link. Thanks

Yup, I do think GF gets the weaning wrong in her 'contented baby' book. She's a big help for showing how to get onto solids, but some of her advice is a bit wrong.

Dd didnt read the clb book. She managed to get onto solids all by herself by grabbing a sandwich and scoffing it at 23 weeks. Think she would have made Gf faint Grin
