Weaning at 6 months - have the guidelines changed?

So I've just started to think about the weaning stage as ds2 is 19 weeks. This week I was told by an NCT friend that the guidelines are being changed back to about 20 weeks. This is certainly being supported by other mums with babies the same age who have been told by health visitors in our area that its fine to start weaning now.

I looked on the Internet however and can find nothing on it (except an interview with annabel karmel which I have ignored for obvious reasons!)

Has anyone else heard this? Ds2 is watching everything we eat and is less satisfied than usual after a 7 oz bottle. Although I am prepared to wait another few weeks if I don't have to then I won't.

the guidelines are exclusive milk (BM/formula) until 6 months and then keeping up milk while weaning until 1 year (when they're probably used to it)

it hasn't changed to 20 weeks, your friend is wrong.

if your DS is less satisfied then feed him more milk or more frequently.

How to Calculate How Much Baby Formula Is Needed

To determine your baby's daily formula intake range, multiply your baby's weight by two. This is the lower end of how many ounces he needs in a 24 hour period. Then multiply his weight by 2.5. This is the upper range of ounces required.

For example, a 12 pound baby would likely need 24 to 30 ounces in a 24 hour period. To determine how many ounces per bottle, divide those amounts by the number of feedings your baby takes per day. In this example, if your baby is taking 6 bottles in 24 hours, he would need approximately 4 to 5 ounce bottles.

Sorry to hijack OP but nickelbabe do you know if that equation applies to breastfed babies aswell? Obviously you could only know the quantity if expressing but am curious.

Also what would happen if your baby was big? Say a 5 month old was 26lb, would you feed them 52-65oz of milk a day? (Either formula or breastmilk)

Sorry for all the questions but I am curious and you are knowledgable! :o

By the time DS was weaned he was on 40-50 oz per day, sometimes up to 10oz per feed. He bloody loved milk!

It made weaning a doddle though, he was on 3 meals a day within a month.

I just kept demand feeding and his milk intake dropped quite quickly once he was eating.

Ok, didn't actually answer the op's question!

I didn't wean til 6 months.

Someone told me they heard on the news here (Australia) that they had put I back to 4 months but I haven't found anything online yet! Must be one of those urban myths!
We started this week at 5 months and 1 week!
