dd is 6 and a half months, started weaning about 4 or 5 weeks ago but we're just not getting anywhere. She refuses all solids, won't open her mouth and gags and makes faces if I sneak a spoonful in. What to do? Should I just keep trying? Any other tips? I just don't know where I'm going wrong.

bottle or breast fed?

madmarchhare · 20/04/2006 15:32

I say stop and try again later.

Piccalilli · 20/04/2006 15:34

bottle fed - she has 5 bottles a day of about 8oz

make her feed thinner maybe? her solids that is so it just runs into her mouth.
Dont worry too much as she is obviously not too hungry yet, but keep trying at her happiest time!

Thanks auntymandy - have tried all different consistencies but she just isn't interested. I guess I'm just worried I'm going to be the only mum still bottle feeding an 18 year old. Will keep persevering at the lunchtime feed but try not to get too anxious about it.

Doubt she will starve herself!!
try giving her half her bottle then her solids and finish off with the bottle
you may have tried that too!!

I would leave it for now. Ds was the same and really didn't start properly weaning until about 9 months. He seems to have a really strong gag reflex which made it all the more difficult.

Piccalilli · 20/04/2006 16:00

thanks jabberwocky - it's a relief to know she's not the only food-refuser as all the other babies i know seem to be on 3 meals a day by 7 months.

I know, it's maddening, isn't it? Smile Ds took really forever to get the hang of table food but now at 2.7 he is right on track.

dd did this at the same age, she is now a month on and back on the food - we still don't know what it was. We stuck to her food routine and just offered food at the normal times and she refused for about 10 days - then amazingly just started eating again, weird aren't they?!?!?!

suzi2 · 20/04/2006 21:24

My DS was like this. And still is a little. He's now 8 months or so.

My advice would be to relax, take a break for a few days and then try again. Don't force feed or sneak spoonfuls in there - except perhaps sneak a small taste onto her lips so she knows it's food. If she goes for it, great. If not, keep offering for a few minutes but don't push it. This is exactly what I didn't do and it just stressed us both and we didn't get anywhere.

You could maybe try finger foods if she enjoys mouthin things. My DS is only funny about spoon food. He'll have a shot at most things if he can feed himself. I found that baby apple rice cakes were a good thing to start with as they suck them to a pulp rather than eat them to start with. And they're quite tasty Smile

suzi2 - I keep eating the apple rice cakes before she gets a look-in! Bad mum.....

Thanks everyone. i'll keep offering food but not push it if she's not interested, and maybe try with some more finger foods.
