Still using hands to eat at 2 is this because of BLW or is it just DS2?

DD and DS1 were both weaned in the regular way, with some spoon-fed mashed up food and some finger food. Both were using a fork and spoon to self feed by about 15-18 months.
DS2 2.1 was BLW and still reverts to using his hands for most meals, and regularly tries to eat straight out of the dish by picking it up and putting his face in it. I try to encourage him to use his spoon, and give ,lots of praise when he does but he still goes back to his hands.
This has put me off BLW for 8 month old DS3 and although he has plenty of finger food, I have gone back to a spoon for me and a spoon for him regular weaning as I just hate the messy eating.

My son is 3. He still eats with his hands now and again. He was spoon fed and used to feed his self. Its probably just what he likes to do

My daughter is 8 and would rather use her hands! She is just lazy though

My 2.5 year olds can use cutlery quite well (I did BLW with them) but often still use hands. My 7 yr old DS does too. He is rubbish with cutlery still.

Do you do anything to discourage it?
I think I do have hang ups about table manners, but if DS1 8 used his hands then after two warnings he would be asked to leave the table.

we did blw, but offered a spoon/baby fork with every meal. food was neve rput just on highchair as some people do but always in a bowl/plate as appropriate.

things like porridge/yogurt, were loaded and they either attempted to do themselves, or guided with help. both used cutlery from 10/11 months ok. from 15 months well, and probably v confident by 18months. they do attempt certain things with hands sometimes now but thats more finger foods, never sticky/meal things.

i think encouraging and reminding gently to use a spoon, and help if/when needed when v young is probably the best way to try and avoid, but it also depends on the child to i suppose

i would also make a child of 8 leave the table if they continually refused cutlery. i think allowances should be made until 4/5 years max, then most children shouldn't have a problem using unless they have dexterity problems or similar
