weaning & tummy ache

Hi all, my first ever post. Have just started to wean my 6 month old ds with rice & carrot but each time he has some (once a day) he gets really upset about an hour later, which I am guessing is tummy ache. This lasts about an hour or so and then he is back to normal. Should I stop for a week or so or do lots babes go through this as their guts get used to food?

Hello. My DD did not have trouble with food. I don't know if others do. Waiting a week and then trying with something else seems a good idea. If it carries on happening then I think you should see your gp.

Agree, sounds like his gut maybe too immature for solids yet. Like you say, I'd leave it for a week and then start again, but maybe try something else?

Are you doing purees and finger food or baby led weaning? Just thought I'd ask so that we can suggest something else to try Smile

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/01/2013 11:29

Oh and how much is he having? Is he having his usual milk an hour before?

lawtoc · 10/01/2013 13:54

He is either having very runny baby rice or puree, and only a few teaspoons. Yesterday I just gave him the tiniest taste of avocado from my finger & he was fine but it can't have been enough to upset him. I spoke to their HV & she feels I should slowly pursevere and just let his gut get used to it. Maybe I should try some infacol or similar with it? Thanks for your replies, being as first time mum is hard!

Personally I wouldn't offer infacol. If something is upsetting him you either need to know about it, to keep an eye out for possible allergies or to stop weaning and try again later.

Did the HV explain why she thinks that tummy ache will help him?

If you are worried about stopping weaning, google kellymom why delay solids.

You might also want to read this on babyrice wish I'd seen before giving it to my Ds years ago.

Interesting article - I guess I was under the impression that it would be the simplest thing for him to digest. Today I gave him a tiny bit of banana & rice but it only equated to about a good teaspoon full & he was fine. So I think I will continue with a tiny bit per day & increase slowly but will move away from rice. Thanks again for advice

At 6 months there should be no need for simple things to digest. Using babyrice and purees dates back to when babies were weaned much earlier. Once they hit 6 months there isn't much you can't give them apart from honey and whole nuts so there is no reason why he can't share your meal, provided you eat fairly healthily of course Smile. You could always just give him he banana and see what he does Smile

My LO suffered bad tummy ache when we started weaning. He has always been a windy baby, suffers with reflux and had colic. We persevered although paid attention to notice if anything made him worse. After a week or so he improved and I know now not to give him broccoli since it made him so much worse. We did ready brek rather than baby rice.

lawtoc · 11/01/2013 08:00

Thanks both. Sharond 101, How old was your lo when you started weaning? Did you just start with one thing meal a day? Also did you give anything for the discomfort? Sorry four the questions! JJJ I think I was worried that whole foods rather than puree may be harder to digest but willing to give anything a go! Thanked both for advice.

I started at 24 weeks. Gave just babyrice for a week then some pureed fruit and vegetables. I gave the babyrice at lunchtime then after a couple of days of him rejecting this tried readybrek. He took this and I added some in at breakfast after a couple of days. I swapped the lunch readybrek for veg after three or four days of him having readybrek twice in day. After a couple of days of veg his wind problems reappeared. I gave him gripe water, warmish water and calpol. He usually settled in a hot bath (always helped his colic too). It persisted for between one and two weeks. He now eats three meals a day without any upset.

Thanks so much that's really reassuring. We will go gently & see what happens!

Can't really see how purees are going to be easier to digest, it's the same food after just smoother. It is easier to get solids into a baby under 6 months if it is puréed as they can't chew, once the baby has reached 6 months, can sit up, pick food up and put it in their mouth, its fine to just give them the food rather than purees. Have weaned 2dc, one with purees and one who refused the spoon and was hust given the food. The only difference in my opinion is your time. Dc1 had to have special things cooked, then puréed, then fed to him, then extra washing up. Dc2 just got on with eating.

lawtoc · 11/01/2013 10:52

I'm really happy to do either, its whatever he is happy with that doesn't give him tummy ache. Trial & error I guess.

Think doing what works for you is the best, just wanted to point out that mashing or purees should not affect digestion and wanted to give another perspective.
