I started weaning ds at the weekend, 1st 2 days baby ice and breast milk. Yesterday and today carrot puree and breast milk, both at 11am feed. Both days he's been a bit grizzly in the afternoon. After yesterdays 3pm feed he threw up including some carrots. I was a bit suprised - though the carrots might have passed a bit further than that. Anyway the nappy was relatively normal, prehaps just a bit darker.

But today!!!!! He took the puree really well - loved it - but since 12.00 has been really grouchy and unsettled, couldn't do anything with him, wouldn't take a full feed at 3pm, just seemed very uncomfortable. Finally about 4.30 I managed to leave the room for 30 seconds while he played in his cot and when I went back in the smell hit me!!!!! before I even got to his cot. Changed him and expected his nappy to maybe be a little bit orange?????
What I didn't expect was it to be bright orange, bursting at the seams complete with solid lumps of carrot still intact. ShockI don't even recall there being any solid lumps that big in the puree to start with!. Basically it looks like the whole thing has just gone straight through him and reformed and multipied on the way.!!!! He seems alot happier now it's out. I don't blame him:(

But is it normal to go straight through like that, is it just his system getting used to things.

This is pretty common, esp. the younger they are. How old is he?

sazhig · 18/04/2006 17:52

Sounds normal to me - a lot of digestion happens in the mouth with chewing, before food even hits the stomach. You wont really stop seeing food bits until your ds gets his molars and starts chewing his food.

If he's a bit upset with indigestion then I would leave solids for a week or two - it may be that he isnt quite ready for them.

Piggiesmum · 19/04/2006 09:07

Thanks, It's a relief to know it's normal.
He's 28 weeks. I think I'll leave it another week and try again (maybe with slightly smaller portions too)

dd2 has been on solids for 3 or 4 weeks now and the NAPPIES! I think she's probably spoiling for a tooth too which is what your ds might be doing too, piggiesmum as they are both the same age arent they (born oct 05)? There's a certain smell to teething nappies that I remember from dd1 and it's rank. But the solids are bound to have an effect as well.

dd2 had such an explosive nappy yesterday that she had poo on her shoulders!!!! [shudder]

Piggiesmum · 19/04/2006 09:45

Yes they are the same age (not seen you on the PN thread for a while). He has had on-and-off teething symptoms for a while now but thats the first time I've been hit by a smell like that Shock Rank is the right word!

Oh the joys of being a mum :D

what date was your ds born piggiesmum? I've lost count of what dd is Blush so i'll work it out from you!! she was 10th oct. people keep asking me and i really don't know in weeks, just that she's around 6m (can you tell she's my second?!)

Piggiesmum · 19/04/2006 11:14

lol he was born on the 4th. After about 4 months I started losing count of weeks too. In my diary I have written "ds X weeks" on every Tuesday so I can look it up without having to work it out.
So your dd will be just over 27 weeks (I think)

Lol! I remember asking my HV if things should be coming out looking very similar to how they went in and she said that it was normal. She added that things are often recongisable in adult poo - it's just that we don't look closely enough!

Raisins really amuse me... GrinThe skins come out and they look sort of whole! I'm obsessed with looking at dirty nappies in far too much detail.

BTW - the smells just get worse and worse. But generally easier and quicker to clean once they get more 'whole'.

Piggiesmum · 21/04/2006 22:42

lol suzi. I'm guilty of studying nappies too closely too. Glad to hear I'm not the only one

dd is 15 months and peas still come out whole!

It's shit. Throw it in the bin and have a glass of wine Grin
