Sorry I am clearly out of the loop on what is in. What on earth is it? Why should you do it?

It's about giving your baby mostly a varied selection of finger food on her high chair tray for example and let your baby decide what she wants to eat and in what quantity rather than "passive" feeding mush with a spoon. In a nutshell....

RuthT · 16/04/2006 14:11

Um so you mean I wouldn't need to cook anything, or puree it?

If you switch does it confuse the child?

No need to puree. They couldn't puree donkeys years ago!
You can offer a mix of course.

It's the easy way of doing things, unless you're concerned (like me) about weight gain. DD is v independent and loves eating by herself, which suits me too, but she gets bored or distracted easily and doesn't actually eat that much. She's still only 8.5 kg (about 17 lbs) at 13 months...

Have a look at \link{http://www.borstvoeding.com/voedselintroductie/vast_voedsel/rapley_guidelines.html\this}

There is also a yahoo group. If you search previous threads you should find it.

It is a very good llink - when I got over the breast feeding is best section!

It does make sense. If I give my ld puree with lumps she invariably chokes, but doesn't when I give her solids to eat by herself.

Although have to say am wooried about weight gain as she really doesn't eat that much at the moment.

How old is your baby ? If you're worried about weight gain it may be that giving more milk is the answer as it has more calories than some of the early solids e.g. pear, baby rice etc. The concept of BLW is that solid food is more about learning tastes and textures through play and that milk remains the main source of nutrition. I was worried at first that ds2 (now 7.5 months) wouldn't be eating enough especially as he is on the 9th%ile (and I had an argument with my HV about his weight but thats another story) - but he's continued to gain weight albeit at the lower end of the scale.

RuthT · 17/04/2006 20:23

Oops, seem to have posted same message three times Blush

Baby is 9 months old and is healthy, but just has never really had a good appetite. She is also on the 9%ile. Other babies (albeit they are male comparators) tend to scoff all solids and then guzzle loads of milk.

I think as she eats and drinks so little I'd be worried that she just wouldn't get enough. But having said that they have an in built ability to survive. She had fads - at the moment it's only sweet things.

I would trust your instincts as to whether she is eating enough. She'll let you know if she's still hungry. I have mainly followed BLW except when he acts frustrated that the food isn't coming quick enough where I've given him a helping hand.

Its funny how we've come to think that heavy is good for a baby but bad for an adult.
