Incredible vomitting baby

Hello,
I would like some advice on what to do with my 7mth old. She has been on solids for 2 1/2 months now. She is teething, and I have recently started giving her the occasional biscuit or baby rice cake, and today a toast finger, but she very quickly will nibble off a lump, and not just gag but physically vomit lots - everywhere.Blush Then I feel like an idiot for giving it to her, but she really enjoys them. What should I do? I don't know whether to not give her any finger foods for a few weeks and then try again, or whether we should persevere. It really scares me when she gags even though I know the choking drill. When is a good time to start giving these? The rice cake packet says 'from 4 months'... I know these are rough guidelines but would welcome your advice and experience.

My ds began weaning at 5m and I think I started finger food at around 6m when he really had the hang of it. I'm not much help here I'm afraid as he's just a breeze, loves everything and is now 8m and chewing some serious lumps! But I would just say don't give in as you may then put it off for too long IYSWIM, but I appreciate it's unfair if she's bringing up all her food. Does she have lumps in her meals? When she bites off the pieces of finger food is she swallowing them before chewing them down? If you want to give her something to chem because of the teething, perhaps try bikiepegs, they don't break off at all. Has she had a rusk? They break off easily but as soon as they touch saliva they turn to mush, which may make the transition period a little easier for her? HTH

Yes we have tried Bickiepegs but she does not like them at all, and having tried it myself, it reminds me of the woodsticks we used to give my hamster when I was little Grin She usually has either rice cakes or organic baby biscotti, which are like rich tea really but in a posh packet.

Yes she swallows them almost immediately, sometimes I get there and swiftly fish them out, but others they are gone so fast theres nothing I can do except give her a sharp pat or a rub when she vomms. She does have some very small lumps in her food and tends to cope with them ok. My dh gets very annoyed when she voms and it makes me feel really bad, but I am not sure how else she will learn, plus she really loves them and is always bright as a button after being sick, but its so annoying having to wash everything and everyone whenever she has a snack, plus I do worry that I might be causing her some harm?

Ds has been a terible possetter (sp) since day 1 and has been called "3 tshirts a day boy" in the past so I know what you mean about being covered!
I agree with you, it is the only way she will learn and I believe it is worth persevering with. When ds gags, I just let him right himself, as he's not gagging for the same reason as we do, he just has food where it shouldn't be and I think that gagging is a nartural reaction for a good reason. I say go with it and she'll get there. Just remember, she's never done this before and has to learn it all too.
Men don't like the mess, do they? They just think it should all be perfect. My dh thought I hadn't swept the kitchen floor in a week when he came home last Mon, and those crumbs were just the result of lunch! Be patient. Smile

Hello Waswondering, Did you just carry on then? She has been doing for a couple of weeks, although seems to cope better with the biscuits. Do you think I jumped the gun with the toast? Someone at baby group told me to try it.

suzy have you seen these? i can't do links but copy and paste this www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk/cgibin/priamlnk.cgi?CNO=1&MP=ITM^GIN200&CAT=BWM61&SPCAT=IT&CODE=86P&TYPE=G&SHOP=TYP
it's those mesh food bags you can put fruit etc in, a good way of encouraging self feeding but no risk of bits? Also try cheese, she would only get soft lumps that may not cause choking?

Suzysooz · 09/04/2006 17:13

Thanks Waswondering, I think I will invest in one of those actually. Great idea. She really loves trying new things and munching but just doesn't seem to see the importance of chewing! Perhaps this will learn her!!!

My little girl, 8 months, does exactly the same thing. Have to say it happens less regularly now so I just take in my stride, clean her up and then give her something smooth. Whatever I gave her I leave for a week then try it again. Somedays she fares better with lumps than others.

I have tried these Organix Moon biscuits which go to mush and seem really easy to hold, she loves them.

Don't feel guilty! There is one article in Junior that I read that advocates starting with small sized chunks of food and not pureing, so I guess it can't be that bad!
