i started dd2 weaning at 19 weeks but she only seemed to like baby rice and plain potato so i left off for a few more weeks hoping to start her again at 26 weeks with a wider variety of food, so we started again this week.

i've tried mixing baby rice with the veg/fruit i have prepared but she gags each time i put it in her mouth and clearly does not enjoy it one bit. i've tried: carrot, apple, banana, sweet potato, broccoli, cauli...weetabix... blah blah blah. HV suugested she might not have a very sweet 'tooth' (ha!) so just used the plainer veg but she still kept gagging. she even threw one whole meal up when i'd managed to get a decent amount down her - which took over half an hour.

so yesterday out of curiousity i gave her some creamed baby porridge in a jar that dh had bought a while ago and she wolfed it down! Same again this morning.

I know that jars aren't EVIL or anything but i really wanted her to have home cooked stuff as i think jars can encourage them to get a taste for processed food. I'm not after opinions about whether jars are good/bad but i'd be interested to hear of anyone has successfully weaned on jars then been able to introduce home-cooked at a later stage. I also wondered about mixing a bit of home-cooked with jars as well?

Jars are much more smooth/pureed. Maybe thats what the problem is. Although it does seem from what you have described that she isnt really ready or interested yet.

I have used jars ALOT - DS would only eat jar food at one point but i suspect that is because of the smoothness thing. Plus the sugar added. He still wont eat lumps (he's 11.5 months) - the lumpiest he'll eat is Weetabix. However, im now at a point where im not really bothered - I got far too stressed about it at one point, not worth it in the first year since the milk feeds are most important anyway.

i'm sure she's ready to eat and have something more than milk - she'll quite happily chobble on bread crusts and toast. it's just the texture she seems to like - like the baby rice and i spose mashed up or pureed veg taste a bit 'grainy' after that maybe.

Have you tried her on home made porridge?

Since it is milky, I assume the taste association from milk to porridge is closer than to some other first foods.

When weaning the boys I had to mix expressed milk with everything to start with to even get their interest.

I had the same problem, in the end I mixed the jar food with my own cooking, bit by bit, until I no longer needed the jar food.

Just give her finger foods then? CArrot sticks, bread etc.

Self weaning is great if they'll do it. Better than spoon feeding if they want to do it. DS didnt want to but maybe thats the way to go?

It's so demoralising isn't it. My ds sometimes eats what I cook (although it must have potato in it) but other times will scream the place down if I try to offer it to him. The cheeky little thing will always eat a yoghurt or fromage frais or Heinz Simply Fruit though. I wouldn't say he's mad on jars. Finger foods sound the way to go if they eat them.

brian2 · 07/04/2006 12:51

heinz do powdered food and for a while that was all ds would eat.... we just gradually added more and more veg to the mix and now he eats most things.... it took ages and ages, think we started weaning last Nov and he has only now started eating most of what we put in front of him.... that said i have only just cut out milk feeds at night so maybe he is just hungry, he is also having finger foods now which i guess makes the whole experience ten times more interesting . I know it is massively frustrating but i am sure ds will be less fussy as she grows and gets more mobile.

Have you tried Babylicious? I sometimes mix 2 cubes of that to 3 cubes of my own cooking. (veg or cassaroles) and ds eats those well.

He will also always eat yoghurts, even if he's refused the main meal little bugger! So now I give him a spoon of yoghurt then a spoon of the savoury etc.

Try mixing your own cooking with half a jar. He'll never notice the difference!

I always wonder if the difference is that jars taste very bland?! Have you tried them? I think texture can certainly be one reason, but it should be possible to puree potatoes as well at home... But they do taste much stronger fresh... Thus, I think jars are yucky and fresh is good. But perhaps for a baby which is new to the flavor thing.. fresh food might be too much?

ahh, if they could only explain themselves! Grin
