Salt when?

I keep asking people when can I give dd salt and everyone says NEVER but all I mean is, when can I stop stressing about it? What age do they have to be before it's okay to let her have a crisp or salted butter for example, I understand that salt = bad but I'm trying to be realistic, it exists so she'll have it at some stage, when is it okay?

No idea but inevitably they will have some salt once established on food between 9-12months..surely?

Try and avoid salt before 12 months after that you can be more relaxed, though even then kids stuff should be as low salt as possible. I stopped stressing about it at 12 months and started using salted butter etc but don't add any salt to the food I'm doing for her.

I started to relax a bit more about it after she was one.
At that age she was eating just about everything we were. We don't add it to cooking but it was things like sauces that had the salt in.

NEVVVVVER only joking, i think by the time my two were 1yr old they would have had some salt or sodium in some of the processed baby jars i used, but obviously a safe level, that is if there was any salts in the baby jars, however when i used to make sandwiches toast etc i put butter on them and that had sodium in themand the bread has salt in it, i suppose there must be a balance between salt and sugar (we need both), they get natural sugar from fruit etc and salt from processed foods, however i don't have actual salt in the house, i never cook with salt and don't have it at the table, much to dp disgust he loves salt (so do i on chips when we are out). As baby gets older they will have some salt in diet through different foods i expect, i'm not too clued up on things like this, but won't allow my kids to add salt to their foods until they are much older and can understand

ironmaiden, dont stress about natural salt levels in food. 1 slice of bread has 1/2 g of salt.
EU directives in processed toddler food restricts salt levels so if you are buying processed foods look for them complying to weaning directives 0-3 years

Shock harrysdad - where do you get your bread from? - the bread I make only has 1 tsp per loaf!!

Pixiefish · 22/03/2006 00:35

I chilled when dd got to 1. Obviously I still limit her salt levels but only in that I watch what we all eat anyway
