Hey everyone...
Does anyone know whether I can feed Milkybar buttons to my 18 week ds? Hes been eating for about 3weeks and eats everything like fruit n yogurts, so was wondering if hes allowed buttons?

Filyjonk, the problem with milk for tiny babies isn't the lactose, it's the cow's milk proteins. Lactose is in all mammal milks (including human), so babies have it from birth. (Lactose issues tend to start around the age of 7.)

I'm pretty sure yogurt still has cow's milk proteins in it, and so counts as milk, and shouldn't really be given before 6 months.

And yeah, baby yogurts say "suitable from 4 months". Some of them are made from formula milk, in which the cow's milk proteins have been modified, to make them less allergenic (human milk proteins are still safer, obviously). But they're generally really processed and not good for anyone, never mind tiny babies.

m4ya - please don't feel got at. If you don't know, you don't know - and good on you for trying to find out! unfortunately not all (well, if any) of the food manufacturers have your child's best interests at heart. So they say "suitable from four months" because they can do so without breaking the law, but I can guarantee that if there was no law they would say "suitable from birth" if they could get away with it! Sad. They're only interested in making money.

Have a look at the stuff that lucykate posted, and contact me via CAT if you want Smile

M4ya thnx for starting this thread becoz I have a dd who is 20weeks n me n my wife been giving my dd petit felious since she were 15weeks becoz our hv said it was ok to do so! by everyones response i think there are mixed views as we were given advise that is completely diff from the advice posted on this thread! wht are we meant to follow wen a hv says 1 thing and the government says another?! as for milkybar i have a dd who is 4yrs, and gets given it as a treat once in a blue moon. so simple answer to ur quetion is no! do not give it to ur baby, they not 'allowed' it. n agree with Umm this is a heated debate becoz its a sensitive issue so dnt think they implying u not doing ur best with ds. I understand where u coming from we were like tht wid our first dd... :)
ps. soz its long!

Sad that HV's are still saying it's ok to wean from such an early age.

There seems to be no consistency with advice at all.

M4ya, you're in the right place for advice. There are loads of fab people on here who can give good advice if your not sure.

jmum6 · 18/03/2006 17:21

I give ds petit filous he's 6 and a half months. Now you've all worried me. Should I be giving him it? If not what should I give him in place of it?

alittlebitshy · 18/03/2006 17:22

i wasn't meaning to sound so crushing (if i did), I'm sorry... i would have burst inot tears if someone had spoken to me like that so i don;t know what i was thinking... i am just aghast at how there has been such a failure to educate. Still!!! Angry

and that is not a criticism of mothers so much as the so called proffesionals :(

alittlebitshy · 18/03/2006 17:23

jmum6 - natural yog/greek yog mixed with your usual fruit pureee. yummy!!!!!!

Nbg · 18/03/2006 17:24

jmum6

Try natural yoghurts rather than the usual petit filous and the rest.

Mix it with some pureed fruit if you don't want to give it plain.

oops

m4ya · 18/03/2006 17:25

Thank you to those who have understood where I am coming from...Smile
I looked at the link posted and am confused as to what I should do now? I have never given ds anything without consulting hv but it seems like she is not fully aware of the advice she has given me and other mums at my baby clinic! Shock
The buttons was just a question because I was awake at 3am couldn't sleep and was eating them myself!
Miaou- I am fairly new to this site so do not know what CAT is....? Blush

CAT means Contact Another Talker, you can send someone a message.

alittlebitshy · 18/03/2006 17:29

lol re your 3am snack. I wish it wasn't lent.. i fancy some myself now Grin.

It is so hard knowing that hvs aren't the be all and end all. it took me ages to work it out, cos it was just so comnforting having someone when, as a scared first time mum ,i wanted answers. I do think that sticking round here on mumsnet will give you more than you need in terms of advice and support. i wish i'd found it when my dd was a baby!!!!!!!!!!!

Miaou · 18/03/2006 17:33

CAT means Contact Another Talker. There is a link at the top of the page. However you need to pay £5 to do so (the money goes to help keep this fabulous site on the go!). I offered to speak to you off-board because I was worried that you were getting scared off - please stay and take advice from us here! And if you want to CAT me feel free!

And it is a very sad fact that there are many HV's out there who are offering outdated advice. What they should be telling people is that you can wean from four months on but that it is better to wait until they are older (but best to start by about six months).

zippitippitoes · 18/03/2006 17:57

I had no idea there was a charge now for cat membership..learning something new everyday!

hunkermunker · 18/03/2006 18:02
