Something has really disagreed with my poor ds. What is the most likely suspect?

ds is a few days off 6 months. Breast fed with an occasional bottle of formula at 11pm.

I've been weaning him gently on a few spoonfuls/ finger food sized chunks of fruit and veg since he was 5 months with no issues but have introduced a few other things over the last week and had a terrible couple of nights

Last night he kept waking up screaming (he hardly ever cries) and thrashing around. He did 4 poos over night and seemed jn real pain with them although they were soft (almost watery)

The night before he was also unsettled but not so much poo.

So here is my list of possible suspect food/events:

Sat: ready brek, a plum, a rice cake + he went swimming

Fri: ready break, some broccoli and apple puree

Thurs: shepherds pie (he grabbed some from his sister so I gave him a little bowl and let him get on with it)

Wed:,3 bottles of 6month + formula as I had to leave him for the day and could only get ready made in 6month+

Tue: his third lot of injections

Can't think of anything else untoward. I would blame the formula (and feel very guilty-I didn't think it would make much difference as he was only a week off being 6 months.) but it seems a long time between we'd and yesterday for it to affect him.

Realise this is a bit waffly- thank you if you've followed and got the gist. It's so horrible seeing my usually very content boy screaming Sad

Could he be teething? That could cause pain (worse at night when lying down) and loose poo.

JennyPiccolo · 09/09/2012 09:25

Did he maybe swallow some pool water?

seeker · 09/09/2012 09:30

Has he had plums before? Maybe that could have been a bit much for him?

I would go back to just bf for today if you can- no more food until he's got rid of whatever it is. Poor baby!

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 09/09/2012 09:40

Isn't their gluten in ready brek? If he's had that twice and sometimes in vaccinations they can contain eggs or be bound with gluten so clutchen at straws I know but possible????

notwoo · 09/09/2012 09:42

All possibilities yes:

Teeth- maybe but our family is very late getting teeth (12months +)

Pool water- quite possibly the way he thrashes around-he loves it. But he has been swimming lots of times before

Plum-yes has had before but maybe now he's getting more competent at feeding himself we overdid it a bit?

Yes good plan to stick to bm and hope he get back to normal.

Was it his first try of formula? Could there be a dairy issue? I have a feeling ready brek has milk powder in it too (at least our local versions here did).

It does sound a little like how DD2 was when she was still getting tiny amounts of dairy.

Wantsnomore · 09/09/2012 09:47

The formula age recommendation shouldn't of had an effect but maybe the amount he wasn't used to could have upset his tummy? I agree, just bf for a while.

TwelveLeggedWalk · 09/09/2012 10:11

My guess would be the ready Brek bunged him up, then the swimming spectacularly unbunged him! Had similar experiences with banana here, but they do adjust quite quickly.
The gluten and milk free cereals (organix do a 4 grain one) have always gone down well here.

notwoo · 09/09/2012 10:25

Ha twelvelegged! That is a good theory!

Will avoid ready brek for time being. Typical as had only just managed to convince 3yr old dd to eat it instead of regular porridge as I thought it would be gentler on ds's tummy.

He has now started sneezing and has a runny nose so it may well be a cold after all!

Hmm. Still snotty, miserable and pooey after 24hrs + of just bm.
Cheeks are very red now as well so am moving teething to the top of the suspect list.
Aghh.
