I dont like to label the way I am weaning my baby (theres a lot of controversy about blw on here eh?!)
she is sometimes spoon fed a mix of puree, sometimes mashed food and also gets to eat anything she wants from my plate. I am cooking the most amazing home made salt and sugar free food, slaving over a hot stove and sticking it in front of her to find most of it ends up on the floor and eaten by the dog. (well it doesnt really get chance to hit the floor because the dog sits with her nose under the high chair!!).
babs is 9 months, will she start eating more in her own good time? In the mean time, I'll just continue to lovingly prepare dishes for the ever so plump dog to enjoy huh?!!!

:o I know I shouldn't laugh it's frustrating to see all ur lovingly prepared food hit the floor still going thru this with dd2 but just keep it up and don't worry about it. All part of it I'm afraid :)

We put the dogs in their beds behind a child gate as we have a wipe clean mat on the floor so DD can be re-offered food she's dropped and also so she doesn't decide to start feeding our already chubby canines! Are you able to do the same?

Oh I remember this stage! DS took 4 long months to discover food is for eating and then one say it just clicked and he shovelled it all in while I wasn't l

Oh I remember this stage! DS took 4 long months to discover food is for eating and then one say it just clicked and he shovelled it all in with a big grin on his face. He was somewhere around 9.5-10 months old.

Sorry it's funny. The trick is to not lovingly create anything for your LO. Just let them eat your own, and you'll feel better that mostly they go to the dog. My 17mo loves her food but still loves to drop food down to the cat, or aim a good throw at the poor thing. You just have to live with it.

I've been through this. Actually didn't find it quite so funny to find food was being wasted. You're right to be wary about the salt content too. Even things like bread and tinned tomatoes have salt in them! On top of this, my DS stopped gaining weight for quite a few months. We were on the verge of doing allergy tests, but in my heart I knew he wasn't taking in enough by himself. So I started just spooning in stuff. Even now at 18mo, he will rarely eat more than a couple of crisps by himself. I think some babies are just lazy when it comes to food and are quite happy to have it spooned in. Do whatever your baby likes and enjoys and, most importantly, thrives upon.

OneLittleToddlingTerror · 03/09/2012 13:46

LeBFG What brand of tinned tomatoes are you buying? This definitely doesn't have added salt. The ingredients are tomatoes (65%), tomato juice, citric acid, with a sodium level of trace!

fhdl34 · 03/09/2012 15:11

The tinned tomatoes I buy from aldi don't have salt in and we make our own salt-free bread.

LeBFG · 03/09/2012 16:38

Good for you if you want to make your own salt free bread to have it eaten by the dog. All I can say vis-a-vis the tomatoes is in my supermarket (this is France though) all brands have added salt. Very depressing when I found out. Other things with added salt that surprised me: sardines, cream-cheese (wtf?) and tinned sweetcorn. I cook a lot of roasts with winey, stock-cubey gravies so personally found it hard to share our food. I realise that isn't the same for everyone and that many babies thrive on helping themselves - just not all do.

OneLittleToddlingTerror · 03/09/2012 16:46

LeBFG it makes sense now. I didn't know the french add salt to all the tinned tomatoes. That's really depressing. I know bread has salt since I have my own breadmaker, and you do need salt for the bread to taste decent! But I reckon it's just a small amount my LO is eating anyway.

I use low salt marigold bouillion, btw tbh that tastes quite grim! I am more of a fish and soy sauce, and I find things that can be salted at the table. For example, stir fries taste horrible if you just add salt/soy sauce at the end. But I found things with a lot of sauce is easier to stir the salt in at the last minute. We just suffer for half a year with adding salt at the table.

There is salt in the cream cheese my DD eats but only 0.6g per 100g and she doesn't even have that much. My dogs don't get to eat DD's leftovers, not that there are many. What there is gets thrown away. I've got used to the salt free bread now and cheaper to make in the breadmaker than buy a loaf these days. There's also salt in the hummus we buy but again, she never exceeds her 1g of salt per day, doesn't even come close
