How did you make the transition from baby food to "normal" food?

Hello,

My DS is 10.5 months old and eats 3 meals a day. He has been weaned in the traditional way starting on purees and advancing onto lumpy food and finger foods here and there. He has always been a good eater and easily puts away a bowlful of food for brekkie, lunch and dinner and has finger food snacks in between. I am now wondering how and when to make the transition to him eating normal whole table foods. My concern is that if I stop giving him puree altogether and just chuck a few bits of food on his table for him at each mealtime that he won't eat enough and be hungry. As I said, he has always been a good eater and sits there like a little bird with his mouth open waiting for the next spoonful and gets annoyed with me if I'm too slow! The food I make him at the moment is quite lumpy which he has no problem eating. The truth is that I am actually getting a little bit tired of cooking special meals (with the next one I'm def going the BLW route!). Every day I have to think about what I'm going to make and how I'm going to make it. I am also keen for him to sit with us at mealtimes and eat with us. Up until now I have fed him his special dinner and then given him some finger food to keep him occupied while we eat. Can anyone share their experiences or advice?

It was ages ago - my youngest is 14 - but I gave mine toast fingers with mush spread on it, then mopped up the rest by spoon, IYSWIM. I also let them spoon feed themselves at about 5 months - in those days you weaned at 3 months. Then gradually left food chunkier and chunkier. Also fed them shephetd's pie etc, just like us. Training them to use a fork was key.

I can only make a suggestion based on what I did with my dd:
Offer him his mushy food and 'normal' food too on the same plate. He will just play with it at first but if you model eating it, and let him feed you some he will get the idea. My dd loved eating pasta and would grab a twist, give me a (pretend) bite and then chomp away!
