Advice on weaning needed

Hi all i am new to the site and would like some advice.
I started my LO on some baby rice with her morning bottle when she was 18 weeks and when she was 20 weeks i introduced a jar and desert only giving her about 3-5 spoons at her afternoon feed, (still giving her a 6-7oz bottle) My LO is now 23 weeks and her following routine is this:
7am - 6oz bottle
30-1hour later 3 teaspoons of banna ceral
11am - 7-8oz bottle
3pm - 5-6oz bottle and some jar & dessert
7pm - 8oz bottle
She then sleeps right through.

Is this correct as i have no one to guide me, i have read and been told that she will drop a bottle out eventually and that you give it 2 weeks and introduce more at a different time.
My LO has tried fruit and rusks and likes them. I have started on jars as was not sure on the best way and best foods to start with.
I have also read that some people are giving a bottle then up to an hour later food so feeding is up 7 times a day.
I look forward to heraing some advice hopefully Smile

Your Health Visitor should be able to "guide you"... Though they can be a bit hit and miss as to how competent they are!

As for first foods. Seriously stop wasting your money on jars. Yes they are convenient and I wouldn't say never use them but they cost so much!

Steam or boil some veg - carrots, parsnips, mash some potato or sweet potato, swede, just mash it up in to small bits. Or you can do/mix with baby led weaning, give her a steamed carrot stick to munch on. Babies can eat food a lot lumpier than jars. Yoghurt, mashed banana, stewed apple/pear/plum...

I, personally, wouldn't count out the spoonfuls and would just let her eat til she's had enough.

Oh and for breakfast you can give her weetabix with whole milk, or porridge, some toast to suck on... The one thing you MUST NOT give her is honey as it is dangerous for children under 1. Also at this age avoid grapes for example. My HV said to wait a bit with peas and sweet corn due to risk of choking... I mash them down tho and DD is find with them mashed up (7 months).

My HV has gone on sick so its eaiser to seek advice from other mums i think as i was told two different things by two different HV.

Ok i did wonder if they were to runny as she likes sucking on a rusk. Sorry the spoons is what she takes i normally put half a jar in a bowl but like you say i am wasting my money as she wastes quite a bit.

Ok wicked thank you will try her on some of them instead.
With regards to her routine is what i am doing ok or should it be bottle then a bit later food?? and when do you normally introduce the 3rd meal?

Trazzletoes this might be a really daft question but id like to try my 6 month old on some toast, does it matter what bread you use? We always have seeded bread but i wasnt sure if this was ok, also do you put any spread on or jam etc?? thanks

babydust27 · 30/08/2012 14:33

chloe1 if youre going to make your own purees id definately recommend using a hand blender for them. Mine was only a cheap asda value one about £4 but its so much better than a food processor or masher, takes no time at all and easy if your cooking in batches to make little pots for the freezer. Asda had their own baby food pots down to 75p for 3 in the sale this morning, i use loads as i make his purees every 3 weeks then freeze them all into portions. I got the veg from the market and only spend about £10 a month and it covers his lunch and dinners

babydust27 · 30/08/2012 14:36

oh and heres out routine for my 26 week old if its helps.

7oz milk when he wakes up around 7am, 8am is porridge made with any left over formula and cows milk, after his nap about 10.30 another 7oz bottes, 11.30 is lunch roughly 100g of puree veg, 1.30 he has a fruit puree or fromage frais, 4.30 he has 100g puree veg then before bed about 6.30 he has 7oz milk.

I do offer him water throughout the day from his beaker

Re: toast... At the moment just bread with margarine/spread on. I don't see why you couldn't give them jam... I think any white bread is ok (am not an expert!) but brown breads will fill them up too quickly.

worldgonecrazy · 30/08/2012 14:39

Not sure if you've looked into baby led weaning - there is lots of information on the internet. It takes all of the guess work out of weaning and you just let baby get on with it. It also means you don't have to do any extra cooking.

Remember, whatever method of weaning you go for, that for the first year their main source of nutrition should be breastmilk or formula, the food is just there as an extra.

naturalbaby · 30/08/2012 14:39

I dropped milk feeds when my baby wasn't interested in them any more and hardly having any milk. I started on a 3rd meal when they were happily eating a decent amount of breakfast and lunch. There's no magic formula - let your baby be your guide so if she wants more offer more and vice versa.

I gave mine the 50/50 bread - DH has seeded bread and they soon started to want his toast when they sat with him but their nappy would be full of seeds a few hours later! I spread unsalted butter, hummus or full fat cream cheese.

Trazzletoes · 30/08/2012 14:48

I cant be fussed with a blender. I just mash with a fork!

Thank you everyone some great advice.
Its really nice getting other mums input Smile
