1 year old will not drink from any sippy cup, only original bottle with soft teat

Hi

After some advice as a bit worried. Dd was ebf for 6 months and then went onto formula with a mam bottle when I returned to work.

She eats really well, mixture of finger foods, our food and mushed up stuff still but she will not drink from any type of cup, other than her bottle.

Im a bit worried because I got a comment today when I was out and about saying she was a bit old for a bottle.

Ive tried the stage 1 cups with both a hard and soft spout but she will not take it. Anything that is faster flow than her bottle teat she really struggles with.

She will hold her own bottle and tilt her head back and drink herself but anything with handles on she just hates.

Any tips?

Thanks in advance x

Watching with interest. Dd won't take milk from anything but a bottle, though will take water from a sippy. She
S still feeding to sleep at night (she's 14 months) and don't care about that bottle yet. Cross that bridge later. But, I would like to change her morning and afternoon milk to cups.

No clues what to do as ds switched at 12 months with minimal fuss. She screams til the bottle is produced.

Maybe find handles to fit her bottle first. I know Avent bottles/cups are all interchangable. Not sure if others are the same. That's my next trick. I'll let you know if it helps.

Have you tried the Tommee tippee cups with a valve? The spout is softer and because of the valve might fulfill his need to suck (and they're less messy) failing that you can get ones with a valved straw that might be ok. Can't say I've been exactly in your position but my son drinks really well out of the valved ones, whereas he makes a bit more of a meal of it out of a proper sippy cup.
Just an idea

My son would happily use a straw based cup or a sports top cup which is marketed at older kids

Tip: she's not too old for a bottle, leave her be

Am watching this with interest, DS is 14 mths and still has a bottle in morning before breakfast, sometimes in afternoon (depending on how well he's eaten or not) and night time but friends similar aged kids are all using beakers or various other bottles ....Sad

I think it is recommended to try and wean off bottle by a year old, but the person shouldn't have commented and it's ultimately up to you what you do.

Have you tried an open cup, maybe letting your DD have a sip from a cup/glass of water you have? This was how we started DD on an open cup and she always looked very pleased that she was getting some of Mummy's drink!

Or giving her her bottle with her drink in and then a cup with a drink in too that she can play with/drink out of if she wants. (both at the same time)

I think there is some reason not to use no-spill cups, although I forget what it is. We have just used the Tommy Tippee free flow lidded cups when we've used lidded cups, and although they were a bit difficult for DD at first, she soon got used to it. You can just go straight to an open cup though.

With my pfb I stressed about this for months. She picked up in this and consequently she was well past 18 months before she would drink from any cup.
Fast forward a few years and to be quite frank as long as the twins were drinking I wouldn't care if it was out of the dogs bowl. (Smile joke obv but you get where I'm coming from!!)
She is not too old, let her be. Contrary to what we are told, there are few 4 month olds who drink from a sippy cup!

I start giving my EBF DD a free flow tommee tippee cup from 6mo. Every meal with water. There really is no trick to this other than keep offering. Children learn by repetition. She starts to drink really well from it around 10mo.

At 1yo, I wouldnt trust an open cup with DD. She is 16mo now and can definitely drink from open cups because she does it with the stacking cups at her water table. But it goes everywhere. I think you best bet is to pick either a free flow or a straw type, and stick with it. Keep offering, maybe even out of meal times as a toy.
