Hi there my ds is one week off 5 months old, is fully breast fed and has become very unsettled over the past few weeks, partly possibly due to teething,(though Im not sure) he is feeding much more at night and really frustrated in the daytimes because he is unable to move in the ways that he wants to, he is screamimg alot, not in pain, general frustration and because hes discovered he can I think. He is showing a huge interest in what we are eating and trying to grab food off plates etc...all the literature says no solids before 6 months....I just wondered if baby led weaning could start a little earlier as it is baby led? I am very tired so this is not very articulate...I would be grateful for any responses if this post makes any sense. Thanks

DD started at 5.5 months - ebf til then, just grabbed a hunk of panettone at New Year & went back for more Grin
I decided it was about the right time to start blw Wink

If he can sit up, grab food, get it to his mouth, chew and swallow then no reason not to. He will consume next to no calories at first though so will have no impact on sleeping (actually many babies sleep worse once they start solids as low-calorie food replaces milk so they consume fewer calories overall in the day).

Oops, pressed post!

I started BLW at 24 weeks when I looked away for a few seconds and when I looked back he'd eaten half my toast...

I thought DS was saying he was ready :)

We just started BLW today (daughter is 5 months exactly) and it was a huge hit! Chunk of banana- slimy and all over the place but she really loved the new taste (when it actually made it into her mouth). No real nutrition consumed but she's definitely interested! I say go for it!

emsylou · 06/08/2012 18:16

Thank you...yes its not about the whats consumed at this point is it, just more about exploration. Thanx for your responses, much appreciated. im sure i will have more questions along the way! Grin

I'd be worried about choking at that early an age personally I'd wait longer to do finger foods.

Littleplasticpeople · 06/08/2012 19:50

Both mine had toast at around 22 weeks and never looked back. As previous posters have said, they eat very little for a while so milk remains their main calorie source. Although we never puréed anything, one of my dc liked to spoon feed herself more than finger food. So don't rule out 'sloppy' foods just be prepared for a mess!
Personally I'd prob wait until at least 5 months before giving any solids, but you know if your baby is ready.

We started at 17 weeks. At the baby massage session. I was eating biscuits and DS got hold of one and started humming the life out of it. Grin

We've started in the last couple of days-ds is 5 months.

He's had sticks of cucumber, a couple of chunks of pear, half an apricot (which he mushed up and licked off his hands with gusto!) and a couple of loaded spoonfuls of carrot puree.

He definitely seems ready- grabbing whatever he's offered and eating it very enthusiastically.

IceCreamCastles · 06/08/2012 22:00

I think I'm going to stick to fruit and veg until he's closer to 6 months

VerityClinch · 06/08/2012 22:02

We started BLW slightly involuntarily when T five months DD put her gave in my roast dinner and slurped my gravy. Two weeks later she Ate my burger.

Both times, in the pub.

How proud was I?

Hmm

I had the same situation, went through a horrible 6 weeks where dd wanted feeding every 2 hours again, was irritable, grabbing food out of my hand, off plates etc. In hindsight, I wouldn't have started weaning at 5 months. At 7 months her eating just took off and now I'm struggling to keep up with her!
