Do I offer breastfed baby water with meals?

I am in the process of weaning my son of 6 months who is entirely breastfed. Do I offer him a beaker of water with each meal or will my breast milk before/after be enough? Thanks.

Your breastmilk is more than enough to satisfy thirst (and hunger) until 12 months.

However, so that your son gets used to taking fluid out of a beaker, it is recommended that you have one to hand at mealtimes.

We didn't when we first started weaning, perhaps around 8 months I was more aware that dd couldn't hold one where as a friends baby could (but had been holding the milk in a bottle from a young age too). I suppose with bf'ing, they only know one thing and that is the nipple, so getting them used to a beaker at meal times is encouraged and makes sense to me.

Dd is 12 months (tomorrow!) and I give her water in a beaker at the end of her meal and perhaps has no more than an ounce.

Hope this helps.

I would offer a lidded beaker with a small amount of water with a meal - more to get him used to a cup than the water itself.
