10mo doesn't like pasta/saucy stuff and no longer tries new things....

Ds is a reasonable eater, but I am finding that whereas to begin with he would pick everything up and give it a go, now, if it's something new/unfamiliar he just sits in his highchair and screeches. He also seems very adverse to pasta and things with sauces.

He eats ok, but seems to like food presented in certain ways eg pizza, or some kind of pastry tart. He will happy eat things like crumpets and bagels, and loves fruit and yoghurt.

So eg tonight he was presented with pea and bacon macaroni cheese. I put some on his tray and about a minute later he just started screeching and crying. He didn't even touch it, nevermind taste it. He ended up having a bagel, fruit and yoghurt.

I'm not sure what to do really as I feel a bit like im failing on the main meal front. He wolfs down things he is familiar with eg spinach and onion tart gets demolished - he had this very early on in weaning and it's become a bit of a staple.

I'm not really sure what my question is, just wondering if there are any tips to at least get him to try stuff before he rejects it.....

I know it probably seems worrying but try and relax, as with all things, it's probably a phase. Some children eat with their eyes or don't want to try new textures but at 10months, there's pretty much naff all you can do about it to force him to try new things.

There's a few things you could try, one is to sit with your child eating the things you want him to try to see if he'll reach over and try it too.

I play a game with my daughter where I offer her something them whip it away when she tries to grab it. Pretty soon she is desperate for that piece of broccoli!

You could leave some new foods in a bowl within reach during playtimes. It takes the pressure off him and he may gravitate towards them over time, especially when you're not looking!

The last bit of advice I'd offer is to consider whether teething might be giving him a sore mouth? He may be loathe to try new things if his gums hurt.

Just keep going. Don't give up. It's a good idea to eat the same as he is eating. If you were eating a bowl of pasta and he was just playing would he be interested in it then?

Also I would vary the things he does like. So put different things on the bagel. Avocado, hummus, phillidelphia etc. if he likes one kind of flan, make a different kind and then another.

Remember babies don't know what 'goes' with what. So sardines on a bagel or in a flan is not weird for them so you can go wild a bit.

Just give him what he will eat :) it's too hot they aren't sleeping as wel he could be teething who knows but meal time dramas are a sure way to
Put a kid off eating. If he's only ten months he's still gonna be getting formula or breastmilk so it's no big deal if he doesn't eat as much for a few days providing he's drinking plenty of water and taking his milk.

You can still offer plenty Along side and he might well be more receptive to new tastes and textures if there's something he really likes to take the edge off the hunger first. Just relax he will pick up on the tension and most if these phases are short lived. It's better at this stage to lookat his weekly intake overall rather than at a daily one. :)
