Food is fun until you're one, will someone please tell my DD that?

My DD has decided she no longer wants 20oz of formula a day. I'm lucky to try and get about 10 in

She is a week off 11 months.

Her average day of eating consists of;

Breakfast - Weetabix made with formula (about 4oz) and fruit purée

Mid morning - try to get a 4oz bottle in.

Lunch - sandwich and fruit, or meal like beef stew

Mid afternoon - try and give her an 8oz bottle. She is refusing this at the moment

Tea - cooked meal like chicken and mash, followed by yogurt.

Mid evening, just before bath time, (please don't flame me, I'm struggling to think of a better alternative) I make an 8oz bottle and use some of it to soften and mash up a rusk to spoon feed her with, and give her the rest of the bottle after bath. Normally left is about 2oz.

All in all she will have about 10oz of milk. If she does not want milk she will point blank refuse it.

Just as a bit of background, she weaned much later than the recommended around 6 months. She was about 7.5 to 8 months before she really took to it. This was her choice rather than me leaving it until later

She has also never been a massive milk drinker. She never used to guzzle 8oz bottles and then want more.

Well after all if that rambling I guess what I want to know is does anyone have any ideas if I can do or change anything to improve things, or does anyone have any suggestions on recipes using formula milk?

is the milk in the cereal counted in the 10oz as milk in cereal, in foods and any other dairy products also count towards the 20oz total. Both my lo's were down to 2 milk feeds by 11 months (one before breakfast and one before bed) but I made up their intake through their food. I just used cows milk on cereal from 6 months.

Also, from 1 year the recommended minimum drops to 300mls (approx 10oz) and she is not far away from that age so I wouldnt be overly worried.

Seona1973 · 21/07/2012 21:21

p.s. have you tried offering cows milk as the odd drink as she may like it better than the formula

SuperSlattern · 22/07/2012 09:19

Thanks Seona

The 10oz includes her cereal but not her yogurts.

I might try the cows milk and see how she gets on

Hi
What is the reasoning behind giving her the rusk? Perhaps if she didn't have this she might take more milk?

Most of the mums I know (and I know a lot as am in a twin group with 20 muns!) have a routine similar to mine which is

Milk on waking (7ish hopefully!) - I bf this feed
Breakfast at 8-830 ish made with 2oz milk
No mid morning milk
Lunch about 1130-12 - biggest meal of the day
Milk about 230 - 7 oz
Tea at 5 - lighter meal
Milk for bedtime about 7 - 8oz

Hi ceevee

I've tried the early morning milk before breakfast but she refuses and cries for food.

The rusk is new, because she wasn't having much of her bedtime bottle, so increasing her milk intake

She sounds like she knows what she's doing. Get cheese and yogurt into her meals and she sounds fine to me.

My DS is 10 months and really doesn't care much for formula anymore, somedays I am lucky to get 8oz in but I asked my GP about this as I was worried he wasn't getting enough and was told that those 1 or 2 bottles are fine as long as he is getting the nutrients from normal milk in things like cheese, yogurt etc.

Our routine is something like:

Wake up 8:30-9:00 - milk feed
Breakfast around an hour later - (normally weetabix or porridge with baby milk or toast and cheese, scrambled egg and a yogurt and fruit)
Lunch 12ish - (he normally always has a yogurt after this and maybe some cheese cubes)
Dinner 5:00 - (usually has a yogurt after this too)
Bedtime 7:00 - milk feed

I sometimes give cows milk as a drink too.

And rusks are evil, I'm pretty sure they have more sugar in them than an adut biscuit, even the reduced sugar ones. I give DS them occasionally but I think if she is getting them everyday she might be getting a bit fly to it and might possibly refuse the milk feed because she is used to getting the sweeter alternative.

If she's not drinking enough formula / breastmilk consider a baby vitamin to ensure vitamin D levels - although with the sun finally arriving that's less likely to be an issue. And as others have said ensure the calcium is available in cheese, yogurt etc.

MilkRunningOutAgain · 24/07/2012 22:23

Neither of my 2 liked milk much, the minute they started weaning they wanted grown up food and lots of it. I did make them lots of milky sauces and rice puddings and yogurts, which they both loved. They are now 9 and 6 and both love their food. Fish pie and broccoli and cauliflower in cheese sauce were big favourites. Oddly my DS now drinks loads of milk, has done since he was about 3, but as a baby he wasn't really interested.

Well we have had a breakthrough. On a seperatly note DD has been waking up at about 11 every night and crying for a good while.

It would take us ages to settle her back down. Tried milk etc and it didn't work because she was too worked up.

So we've introduced the 10pm bottle back. It's worked a treat. Her milk intake is up and the night waking is down

And the rusks are banned. So DH is being very helpful and is ensuring they are disposed correctly Smile

My DD has never taken the recommended about of milk. She too has about 10oz and my HV told me to supplement her dairy intake with yoghurt and cheese sauces x

SkiBumMum · 25/07/2012 12:39

My DD2 is offered 12oz a day. Probably drinks 10oz. She doesn't like formula. Never has. I don't think she's ever has 20oz in a day so don't worry. She's growing and developing fine!

She has lots of yog, cheese, Philly etc and eats a well varied diet otherwise.

I give her some of her bedtime milk as porridge. It's the only way she will sleep. DD2 has some too. It's a long time from kids tea to breakfast - supper rules!
