DD2 turns 6 months this Wednesday. I intend to blw as I did with DD1. Now, the only things she mustn't have are honey and whole nuts, right?

So all the age recommendations on the food in shops are from a 'pureeing' point of view and only to do with what they should be able to handle, not things they shouldn't have?

I'm thinking of snacks really not jars. So the biscuits etc that you'd chuck in your bag that say 7 months or 12 months etc. Or have I got it arseways?

Yes, they're generally just the companies idea of some sort of progression from mush. However they can also be relevant to how calorie dense they are, remember the smaller the baby the more calorie dense food really needs to be - as they can't eat much. Generally though you don't need to buy any of that stuff, it's really expensive, tasteless and no better for a baby than any other similar food.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 08/07/2012 20:09

Thanks :)

Didn't think about calorie dense, amazing how much you forget. You're right about those biscuits but, what can I say, I'm weak! :o I won't buy them after the first packet, I never did with DD1. It's the novelty factor.

I feel like I'm hopping up and down on the starting blocks, waiting for Wednesday to hand over the gluten and dairy :o Wasn't like this with DD1.

Have you been to the website www.babyleanweaning.com

I do like a pack of rice cake. I found them great for going out, and also for spreading things on. I just buy the plain ones though as DD hasn't learned to complain about them being bland yet!

All the other store cupboard no-effort go-out snacks I buy are adult ones. I always have cheese slices for packing sandwiches (yes I'm lazy). I tear them into squares and put them into those tommee tippee weaning pots. Dried raisins, prunes and apricots are hits too.

OneLittleBabyTerror · 08/07/2012 21:12

Oh I know I can buy adult rice cakes and split them myself. But the organix ones are just the right size for the tommee tippee pots. Blush

I don't think you can beat baby crisps. They are expensive but have no salt. So worth it imo.

Ds just has rich teas or digestives for biscuits though.

Blw website is amazing. Remember to keep an eye on salt contents. 1g is very easy to reach daily.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 08/07/2012 21:14

I've bought two packs of apple rice cakes and DD1 (4) has eaten them all. Might have to give DD2 her bags of mini animals and mini cheddars then Wink

I'm always more shocked at the sugar content of some of those baby food. I remember looking at all the fruit bars and they are all like 20% sugar or more! It's really more like a pudding then a healthy snack.

FredFredGeorge · 08/07/2012 22:12

JollyGoodFun But salt free crisps for adults are way cheaper than baby ones - if you want salt free crisps (although I like potato as a food.)

OneLittleBabyTerror I'm always surprised by the amount of all carbs in baby specific food (including the popularity of homemade fruit and veg purees) but it doesn't really make a huge amount of difference as long as the baby is getting the fat and protein. Although humans can make carbs easily.

Rice Cakes are something DD has never eaten - she's 13 months and has eaten most things, now Corn is in season here I'm out of the UK at the moment it's been quite a revelation how she can eat half a corn cob chewing the kernels off with just her two bottom teeth.

I couldn't get DD to reach 1g of salt hardly ever btw just eating adult food, not that I actually particularly cared about it, but being the mindset I am I counted. I guess it all depends on the food mix you actually eat.

CMOTDibbler · 09/07/2012 11:45

Yep, if you want salt free crisps, then adult salt and shake crisps are the way to go (nabbing the blue packet natch). Nothing but potato and sunflower oil.

baby snacks are a) a ripoff and b) often unhealthier than adult snacks. For instance the biscuits are higher in sugar than a rich tea biscuit

GwendolineMaryLacey · 09/07/2012 11:49

Can you still buy those crisps? Blimey.

OK message received about baby biscuits. I shall wean myself off them (did you see what I did there? :))

like rusks? MMm rusks are nice, but I wouldn't give them to a baby, all that sugar Grin

Have you got a crinkle cutter ? Best ever thing for BLW - for melon, pears, mango and other slippery fruits - cut them into crinkly fingers for better grip.

I loved doing BLW with my youngest. He's still a fab eater now. Less said about puree weaned DD who still wouldn't eat lumps at 15mo and is still the pickiest eater in the world, ever
