B LW and removing food from their mouth

I started blw with ds2 a month ago (he's now 7 months), and I think it's going ok. He picks food up off the table (if it isn't too slippery, or else I can hand it to him), get it in his mouth, and give it a chew. Some gets swallowed and some dribbles out the front. Sometimes though, he'll sit there for ages, with the same food in his mouth. He'll have finished eating, but will still be mushing the food about in his hands, but do I just leave the food in there indefinitely (well, not really indefinitely, but you get my drift)?

Sometimes he's had a dirty nappy in the middle of mealtimes, and if he's getting distressed then I'll change him without waiting for the end of a meal. I don't want to lay him down with food in his mouth incase he chokes, but if I hook it out with a finger (sometimes easier said than done), then he's not learning to swallow food himself. He's started getting more dirty nappies whilst eating, so it's almost as if he's getting fewer opportunities to swallow, but I don't want to leave him in a dirty nappy for half an hour or so, until he finally swallows the food.

What do you do in similar situations?

I'd leave the nappy until the food is spat out.

Hooking food out isn't recommended IIRC as it creates a choking risk because you can push food further in.

If he's mushing it up and not eating then it's up to you - you can either clean up and take it off him, or let him explore.

Agree with Fliss, wait until he has swallowed and then change his nappy.

As for playing with the food, how about giving him 10 minutes after everyone else has finished eating and then clear away?

We put our hand in front of DD's mouth and asked her for it, she seemed to learn quickly what that meant, didn't happen often as we rarely needed to take food off her. more often stones from the garden...

Sorry to hijack, but the thing I find difficult is when he has a big lump of bread firmly stuck to the top of his mouth. I tried leaving it there but it just appeared to stay there so now I've started hooking it out with my little finger...

I also hook eventually. But I note the warning about creating a choking risk...
