Why is the food I give my 6 mo clearly still present in her poos? Sorry tmi & a bit grim! I have seen broccoli pieces & red pepper make an appearance - does it not get digested?! Is this normal?

Yes pretty normal, it's why babies aren't ready for solid food for quite awhile, they can only digest certain parts of the food, and their systems are pretty rapid so other is not inside them long enough to digest. Also remember that the body requires lots of bacteria inside it which may not yet have colonised your babies gut - particularly if you've been very keen on a sterilised enviroment.

It's quite normal for the more fibrous bits in vegetables not to change much as they go through, but they have got some of the nutrients out and eating is what builds the digestive up to be able to fully digest everything (well not everything obviously as no-one does that)

BlackOutTheSun · 26/06/2012 12:40

Yep normal, I can tell what dd has eaten by her poo's

OneLittleBabyTerror · 26/06/2012 13:32

It is very normal yes. I've seen all sorts. Like fredfredgeorge says, it confirms, at least to my mind, that they don't actually take in as much as some people would have you believe in solids.

At 15mo, I still see how the food affects DD's poo. For example, pesto pasta gives very gritty poo. Or I can see skins of red pepper or beans. Compared to us adults where it stays relatively consistent.

upcydaisy · 26/06/2012 14:58

fred thanks for that

upcydaisy · 26/06/2012 15:04

fred thanks, that might explain why ds has never had the 'bits of carrot' etc in his poo that so many people talk about. His love of eating the mud in the garden and the sand in his sand tray must have colonised his gut earlier than usual!

His poos just transitioned from yellow, runny milk poos to normal, brown more solid poos once weaned.

Quenelle · 26/06/2012 15:04

Competely normal. Look for black strands after she's eaten banana.

choceyes · 26/06/2012 15:06

Normal. Watch out for blueberry poo too.

Becky2011 · 26/06/2012 15:29

Thanks all! Blueberry poo Shock hehe!

And beansprouts. Watch out for those. If you remember you've given those to dc then there's no need for a panicked phone call to the gp surgery about the distressing case of mahoosive threadworms your 9mo seems to have not me honest Blush

Becky2011 · 26/06/2012 22:09

Oh yack, cockadoodle, beansprouts are off the menu!

Glad to have read this thread, started BLW with 6 month old DD yesterday and 5 hours after she had some banana 2 little chunks turned up in her poo! I was quite shocked to find food in her nappy so quickly, didn't think she'd swallowed anything. Have since had evidence that she swallowed some cucumber, tomato and broccoli as well! It's great fun this BLW lark, having a ball :)

KatoPotato · 01/07/2012 19:57

Grapes often make a second appearance too!

GnocchiNineDoors · 01/07/2012 19:59

Kiwis can make you google symptoms too

Becky2011 · 03/07/2012 10:15

Yes it is quite satisfying to get confirmation something is actually getting swallowed, as it seems like most gets spat out again! We've had strawberry pips!

Quenelle · 03/07/2012 11:57

DS is 3 and kidney beans are still clearly visible in his poo after a chilli.

Sandalwood · 03/07/2012 12:01

I was put off sweetcorn for quite a while.

Didn't someone on here go to the doctor and it turned out that the baby had eaten beetroot?

mamij · 03/07/2012 12:03

Peas make an appearance too! And the brown stringy bits from bananas too Smile
