Took some pear purée first day but since then has had mouth clamped shut. Have tried all different times of day, levels of tiredness, hunger etc. He is Happy to "self feed"(eeh, that is a messy business is it not?) with us at table. I didn't do BLW with other 2, don't want to do it with no 3, but am I going to have to just do blw or do you have some tricks to get a baby to be spoonfed? If I do end up being forced down the BLW road, how do I ensure he is eating a)anything b) enough of the things he might become deficient in if not weaned in time. He is EBF btw, and totally refuses a bottle. And tongue-tied, could that be relevant? And has a chesty cough. He just seems really hungry all the time! Any thoughts pleease?

Just let him self feed. As long as he still has plenty of milk won't be deficient in anything.

Ok I'll do BLW- but one question- when does the waste stop being so considerable? And tips on reducing mess? Thankyouplease

Mine is bf and BLW as well. She won't take the spoon at all. She also passed her 1 year check, following her line on the graph perfectly.

Have a look at babyledweaning.com

Also have you tried loading a spoon & letting baby put it in, with you guiding a bit? I do this & also have a second spoon which dd will sometimes let me put in!

I will, have abandoned feeding with spoon just now(for baby, sometimes still do other 2- no judgment!) I just can't see how any of it gets ingested! But it must be..

Keep trying with the spoon every few days. My ds wouldn't take a spoon but after he'd self fed for a little while he was fine. I also find he enjoys lumpy food much more than purees.

eisbaer · 29/06/2012 15:02

BLW going very well, so far! Much less hassle than purée, I am a convert. And feel totally centred since I found a wipe able tablecloth from tesco that matches the decor! DS3 even snoozed longer than 30 mins this morning, a sign his wee belly may be a bit fuller than up till now. All is well. Thanks for the advice.

I've weaned one on purees and then had a total spoon refuser who we did BLW.

BLW was totally her choice and in the end it turned out to be much, much easier than purees.

My advice would be to go with what he wants rather than force him to into being spoonfed. Surely it's more easy for you to just give him what you ar all eating?

eisbaer · 01/07/2012 18:56

Absolutely - am a total convert! For this one anyway... Just wish I could wean the night feeds slightly, but that is for another thread...

Glad it's going well for you. DD was a spoon refuser, but I think around 12mo, she clicked that sometimes she can eat faster if I help! It's usually things like yoghurt, couscous or wobbly pudding type of things. She'll still use her spoon like a dipper, but she'll lean forward to eat off the spoon I filled. (Or she'll grab the spoon and put it into her mouth). Whereas at 6mo, there's no way she'll eat anything off a spoon from me.

It's just so much easier if you let them guide you, instead of fighting and trying to do things your way.

birdofthenorth · 01/07/2012 22:22

Blw & get a dog to lick up the mess Grin

birdofthenorth · 01/07/2012 22:24

On a more serious note yes, like the last poster, DD got to 13 months refusing a spoon then picked one up & used it pretty competently from day one. Used a fork fine shortly afterwards.
