Tried all cups, all juices, water of all temperatures, heavily diluted milk, tried every time of day, before meals, during meals, after meals, tried waking her at night to sneakily give a bottle while she's sleepy. Nothing. She'll only take about 8oz a day of milk and no other fluids at all. To make matters worse it seems she's got an allergy to dairy so can't even top up her lack of formula with yogurt or cheese sauce.
I'm terrofied of dehydration. I'm close to resorting to letting her drink the bath water which she wants to do!

What shall I do? She's got very hard, very regular stools (about once an hour, no kidding, 4th dirty nappy of the day is about to get changed and it's not even lunch time yet)and her skin is dry. I've got a bottle of ribina just sitting there untouched. It's so frustrating!

Anyone got any advice???

how old ? If it is still fairly early in weaning, add lots fo fluid to her food or perhaps cut back the solids and give milk first. Not drinking anything other than milk in first year isn't that uncommon or necessarily a problem.

BettySpaghetti · 27/02/2006 12:43

Fruit will help with softening the stools and some also contain a lot of liquid (try melon, very ripe peach etc).

If she has a problem with dairy is there an alternative (soya or something?) yoghurt and cheese she can have instead.Depends on her age I suppose

Ironmaiden · 27/02/2006 12:50

9 months. Been giving soya yogurt but it doesn't have all the calcium etc she needs does it?

i fear that we're heading this too...dd is really constipated at the mo so think this is a contributary factor.

any quick fixes?
can they give up milk so soon?

forevermore · 27/02/2006 13:38

by the way ironmaiden, your LO is definetly constipated by the sounds of it; you may have to take her to GP and get something prescribed. the normal fixes (prune juice, water, orange juice) will be impossible if you LO won't drink anythingSad

chocolateshoes · 27/02/2006 13:47

I'd agree that you should see GP or nurse to get some help & advice there just to be on the safe side.

Also agree with BettySpag that some very pureed fruit might help.

Good luck!

I've got a batch of frozen kiwi/pear/apple and apricot I made at the weekend I'll give her for tea. Doesn't help the dehydration tho. I will try melon, that's a great suggestion from Betty.

Ironmaiden · 27/02/2006 14:17

Anyone got any suggestions why she's gone off milk? Could she be wanting to be weaned?
I know I hate milk in every form, maybe she's just taking after her mum a bit early?!

I'll try the fruit puree thing to get her bowels back into some kind of rhythm instead of producing tiny amounts every hour and yes, melon sounds hopeful.

Just want to yell at her "DRINK!"

teething - maybe she doesn't like the feel of cup/teat againste her gums. Have you tried a variable flow teat so she could suck as hard or weak as she likes or even a lidless cup(with your help!). What formula are you giving her if she is allergic to dairy ?

BettySpaghetti · 27/02/2006 14:24

Just to add to my earlier post -avoid too much banana if shes constipated -this has always "bunged up" my two, not to the extent of constipating them but certainly firmed up loose stools.

Ironmaiden · 27/02/2006 15:00

Aptamil. Not sure if she's allergic, just know that she had a desperate rash all over her when I introduced petit filous and cheese sauce to her diet. Have stopped them now and she's better.

Was it homemade cheese sauce or commercial - just wonder if it might have been an additive rather than the dairy itself, esp if she can tolerate regular formula ? Have you tried plain "live" yoghurt which may help her gut too, perhaps mixed with some stewed fruit.

forevermore · 27/02/2006 16:00

can they have biolive yogurts b4 1 years old?

Ironmaiden · 27/02/2006 18:57

Homemade. She's not completely better either so it's probably not dairy, just cutting it out at the mo just to be sure.

Can you get variable flow teats in tesco/boots?

LIZS · 28/02/2006 16:14

think so - many of the normal manufacturers such as Avent and Mam do them.
