Alternative to BLW

I have 6 month old twins who I have been introducing to purees over the last month. I'm unsure, though, of where they go from here.
Could anyone who hasn't gone the route of finger foods and BLW offer any advice, please? I'd be grateful to hear how anyone else did it.
Many thanks x

The alternative to BLW is traditional weaning. The following page from NHS has some sort of timeline for you to follow

www.nhs.uk/start4life/Pages/babies-food-variety.aspx

What kind of food is ok for the different ages. When to introduce finger food etc.

Thanks for replying, onelittlebabyterror. The NHS link is really useful - much apprecieted.
I just wonder what experiences other mum's have of traditional weaning as most mums now seem to follow BLW. Thanks x

Don't know, I did BLW myself, but mine is a spoon refuser from the start. All the others in my NCT group did traditional weaning, and are Annabel Karmel mums. Another refused the spoon early, I think around 9mo. The rest all happy spoon feeders. They are all capable of eating good finger foods and self feeding by our 1 year birthdays. (At least they are all happy feeding themselves cakes)!

So true Joyful. My mum said I was given fork mushes, things chopped really finely and porridge. Blenders just aren't in chinese kitchens, and back then they don't have this kind of thing (I know a few mums in HK with it, but who would buy this in the UK?!!) I don't know how common is jarred stuff because I haven't asked.

However, it's not the same as today's BLW either. Mum said I was on lumpy spooned food and weren't allowed finger food for a very long time. She was suprised my DD fed herself at 6mo. She said we went from being fed, to using cutlery. My guess is that would be nearly 18mo to be effective.

So the idea that purees in the form of smooth-as-drinks jar or pouches is traditional is actually very new.

I weaned children 20+ years ago

We used purees as the guidelines then was from 4 months

From 5/6 months, we just mashed food and gave finger foods when they could hold them. The mashing got less and we chopped into bitesized pieces so the baby could pick them up and feed themselves or still be helped

One of mine didn't start solids until 6 months so she went straight onto mashed/finger foods

I didn't BLW my twins, I started on lumpy purée and porrige, and gradually the lumps have got bigger and they're eating normal food now (20 months). At some point along the way (16 months?) DD wanted to feed herself with the spoon, so she did, and at some point since then I 'encouraged' DS to try a spoon - they're fairly proficient now (though if DS is tired he just looks sadly at the bowl and then me until I give in and feed him).

Just purée less, mash a bit, and offer finger foods too. Watch your babies and try less mashing and new finger foods every few days/weeks and if they manage the new textures, then great :)

Good luck!

Thanks for all of your posts. I'll perhaps give the blender a rest over the next few weeks and get hard to work with my mashing fork! Many thanks x
