Remember posting about dd2 and her non eating a few months back. Well, now she's eleven months old. Can't say the quantities are immense, but in the last couple of weeks she's fed herself enthusiastically with roast chicken, potatoes, peas, banana, sweet corn, crackers with hummus, Cheerios, carrot, parsnip, biscuits, fish fingers, beef stew etc etc. it just seems to have clicked. Still lots and lots of milk, but I am now hopeful that she's on the way to eating well. Just in the six to twelve months window... Purées not for her!

That's great! There is still hope for my DD then. What problems did you have??

Molehillmountain · 20/06/2012 21:22

I started weaning at six months and for ages she would gag and vomit when any food at all, pieces or purées went in. Not interested in feeding herself and wouldn't take stuff off a spoon either. I took the view that she would do it when ready but dh wanted to keep trying and the hv tried to get me worried and take her to a feeding specialist, (which i would have but i'd read solids were for somewhere in the second half of the first year, not bang on six months) The worry rubbed off a bit and I'm very glad she's eating, although I wish I'd trusted my instinct. I guess she's still got to get the point where he solids are actually nourishing her rather than the copious amounts of breast milk, but she's growing well, developing well and very happy.

:o fantastic!!!!!

Thank you for posting, this is really encouraging for me - my dd is 8 months and not really eating anything. We started blw-ing, which seemed to start well, but the last few weeks she's just not eaten anything, and almost doubled her (breast)milk feeds. I got worried and tried to spoon feed her but she just wouldn't take it. Dh has been great (though my mum is a different story) and said 'a child is not going to starve itself if food is on offer' and also says we should avoid mealtime confrontations and stresses as much as possible.

Thanks for posting, OP, I can see I just need to give it more time! Well done for persevering with it!

Glad to be helpful! Smile It is hard to be confident when they're not eating. Things I learnt this time that were useful although the hv couldn't get her head round it were the iron in breast milk is low but really readily taken in hence anaemia unlikely. Kelly mom was useful - I am a link dunce unfortunately. And there isn't much evidence for the "windows of opportunity" idea that people (hv liked to throw that at me too). Again, see Kelly mom. I just wish in some ways that I hadn't gone along with dh trying to spoon feed dd but I guess sometimes I need to let dh have a say or else he becomes deskilled. Today-chips Blush and peas!

Sorry-just can't help adding that dd2 was pretty much shovelling spag Bol into her mouth tonight! And then feeding herself yoghurt on a spoon (I dipped it). I fear she might have heard she was supposed to be eating properly by a year old and was conscious of the deadline!

My dd was probably nearing 8m before she was actually eating enough to constitute a meal and three times a day. She is neither underweight unsettled anaemic fussy behind or anything else hv like to scare you into believing what will happen if they aren't eating three course meals thrice daily bang on 6m. :) it all clicks eventually and if it's done in a patient and fun way the results r far better than shoving puree down their necks in a panic. enjoy !!! Thrilled to hear she's doing so great :o

Sorry I'm replying so late, dd came down with chicken pox on Thurs eve! At 8 months everyone's saying 'good age to have it' and she doesn't seem that bothered by it but she looks so sad all pox-y!

Thanks for the tips, molehill, I did start giving her vitamin drops but they were so vile she made a face & spat then out! Kellymom is such a great resource. I think I just need to 'keep the faith' as my NCT tutor said to me when I bumped into her in the supermarket thus week! It's really great to hear success stories!
