When I started weaning my DCs at 6 months old, I just included them in all our meals and snack times from the start. I did BLW, so they ate if they wanted to and didn't if they didn't fancy it.

Are you going down the purée route or blw? Usually you start with one meal often tea-time and gradually build it up.

PuffPants · 19/06/2012 13:44

Depends how old baby is too. Don't drop any milk feeds at this stage.

GnocchiNineDoors · 19/06/2012 13:45

I started by offering a slice of toast, an orange wedge and a cup of water when I had my breakfast. At lunch, she would get half a banana, rice cakes with something smeared on them and a cup of water. At dinner time, she would have a bit of chicken, potato wedges, brocoli.

All similar to what im eating really. And similar times.

GnocchiNineDoors · 19/06/2012 13:46

Oh, yes, and I still offer the same amount of milk, as she really is only 'eating' about half of what I offer her.

doing the puree thing, not planning on dropping any milk feeds it's just that after his bottles now he's looking at me like where's the food lol should i offer him food at 'mealtimes' do you think? he's 20 weeks old but don't judge me my HV has agreed to him being ready for weaning xxx

MNers don't tend to judge so don't worry about that, he's your son so you know if he's ready. Under 26 weeks you can't give them gluten, eggs, nuts, fish, soya products, honey, cows, goats or sheeps milk, salt, unpasturised cheese, chicken or meat. So you could give fruit and veg at this stage.

I started DD with one spoon of baby rice once a day in the evening when we had our dinner. I increased it to two spoons after a couple of days and then three. This is what I did, starting when DD was 24wo:

Baby rice 1 spoon (tsp), once a day for three days
Baby rice 2 spoons, once a day for three days
Baby porridge 3 spoons, once a day for three days
Veg purees 3 spoons, once a day for three days
Veg purees 4 spoons, once a day for two days

Then when she was 26 weeks I did the following:

Week 1
Two meals a day (Breakfast and Dinner) 2-5 spoons at each giving baby cereal for breakfast and veg purees for dinner. Food was smooth in texture.

Week 2
Three meals a day 2-5 spoons at each with same foods as above but introducing fruits (waited so to avoid sweet tooth...didn't work!). Food was smooth in texture.

Week 3
Three meals a day and as above but had 5-10 spoons at each meal. Introduced finger foods such as banana, toast, apple but not much. Food was smooth in texture.

Week 4
As above, would have introduced meat here but was on holiday so decided to wait a week. Added texture to food.

Week 5
Introduced meat, lentils and more finger food and moved up to 15-20spoons with each meal, also introduced pudding at lunch time. Some meals no purees and just finger foods. Started making food lumpy.

Week 6
This week - food is now lumpy and she is doing well with finger foods, usually give a finger food with every meal now.

Thought seeing it all written out might help, people do it in all sorts of different ways though. I didn't 'get' weaning and must have read 20 different weaning guides which all said conflicting things so I came up with the above based on what I'd read. I think we've gone much faster than I'd anticpated. At lunch today she had some of my pasta - I had been totally against BLW but she is doing so well with finger foods that I'm considering cutting out the purees altogether now.

Is there any particular reason you want to wean him early?

Showing interest in your food does not mean he needs to eat it himself. He would probably be equally interested in watching you smoke a cigarette...

If you're determined to do it, I wouldn't give more than a few spoons of puréed vegetables at this stage - carrots (mixed with a little of his usual milk) butternut squash etc. Meat, dairy and bread are a long way off.

Remember choking is a real risk with such a young baby, I wouldn't advise giving him a potato wedge to chew on Hmm
