Tummy ache??

I am weaning DS who is 6m - he was ebf until this point. He has pretty speedy and explosive digestion and he has also never been a great sleeper. However, since we started (last Monday), he has been really unsettled at night and has been arching his back and straining something chronic. Although I didn't expect weaning to be a magic button, I thought he might go slightly longer between wakings but if anything, he is back to his almost newborn routine of a couple of hours max.

I think it is his crazy digestion kick starting as when he farts, it sounds quite trapped wind like, iykwim, and his poos are obviously changing which could be causing him a little grief? He is still bf a fair bit so am not concerned he isn't getting enough fluid but could he be constipated (his evacuations aren't remotely solid either, sorry possibly tmi!) - he is only on veg and fruit at the mo.

I wondered if anyone else had this and if so, whether you could recommend a gentle way to ease this a little until his system catches up and he is not so unsettled? Or does this sound like something else and I should maybe get him checked?

So you've been weaning for a week, before this was he arching his back and straining at bedtime? How many times a day are you feeding him and how much would you say?

People do think that weaning helps them sleep better but everything I have read says contrary to this. When I started weaning DD she went from sleeping through the night to waking up once or twice again but after a few weeks she settled back down. What does your son do when he wakes in the night, is he crying?

Thanks for your reply - and no, he wasn't doing the arching thing before hand which is why I think it's the food. He was only having one meal but we've started him on two this week (as I return to work in 3 weeks Sad and would like him to be happy with his food before I go back!) I try to read his cues about how much and as soon as he starts to refuse, I stop and top him up with milk if he wants it - more often than not, he does have a little bit!

I agree about the weaning meaning less sleep although am hoping it's a temporary blip whilst he adjusts. DS does wake up crying but he has always done this as I think when he wakes at night he is genuinely always hungry!

He's already woken twice since he went down at 8pm tonight though so could be another long night!!

What R u giving him? And what time is his meal?

Skillbo · 20/06/2012 23:26

So far only fruit and veg (although had a bit of breadstick which he gummed to death earlier) and he has something about 12,30 and dinner about 5ish.

He did have an ENORMOUS poo today followed by a couple.of.smaller ones so am hoping he has got things moving again as seems a bit more comfortable?

Maybe hold off on the 5pm solids for now so he's not going to bed on a full solids stomach. Then a warm
Bath before bed might help relax him and keep his tummy moving so he's more comfortable :) Or maybe his tummy isn't quite handling solids yet u could always leave it a week or so and try again :)

Thanks for taking the time to reply...

He seems like his old self today and has been exploding pooing much easier than before but take your point re the 5pm feed and we've decided to continue but only a small amount followed by a hefty bf until he is totally happy!

Does seem like a new boy today though so hopefully we're overdue the worst (hope haven't spoken too soon Smile)
