BLW - it's working!!

DD is 7 months today and after 5 weeks of trying to spoon feed her I decided yesterday that I wasn't going to torture myself anymore and try BLW again. I did attempt it a few times but everytime I did she would either choke and throw up or just sit there and not really know what to do.

Well now she's a pro. Yesterday she had avocado for lunch which she loved. Broccoli and potato for dinner which again she loved. There was a lot of mess but no stress whatsoever.

However I have noticed a BIG difference at starting at 7 months rather than 6 months. But the spoon-feeding, purée crap was so stressful and time consuming. The only problem now is I have a freezer full of mush.

You live an learn I guess. Anyone out there thinking of trying BLW I say DO IT. This is coming from someone who absolutely hates mess but I look past all that when I see how much DD is enjoying herself!!

:o that's great!!!! Dd1 was mush fed took just fine but dd2 hated it so I too went the finger food route and just let her get on with it and she loved it!. Still makes a mess a year later but hey as long as they eat and enjoy who cares !! :o it's great to hear your dc is enjoying herself!!

Sounds brilliant, did you literally find that she took to it straight away second time around? I've been doing purees with finger foods since DD was 6mo and she's now 7mo1w and she just doesn't seem to get finger foods. She'll humour me sometimes and try a bit (put it in her mouth once) but mostly she'll repeatedly throw it on the floor. I tried BLW for 2 days to see if by removing purees it would work better but she just refused and ended up upping her amount of milk. She's onto lumpy puree now and can manage that no problems so it's not texture, I guess it's suited to some babies and not others.

BTW - all of your purees...put the veg into a soup and the fruit into smoothies Smile

Fab idea. Hopefully the weather will improve and she can suck on the frozen fruit!!

I started off with BLW and she just kept choking and throwing up. Also scaring the hell out of me!! So I gave up and started with purees. She just didn't entertain purees at all. DD had other ideas! So I thought bugger this for a laugh and gave blw another try. She took to it straight away!! She is ebf so I guess she is getting everything from me as she is growing well.

Purees where stressing me out and making us both unhappy!! I don't enjoy the clearing up at the end of it all but both mum and baby are happy so who cares! Tbh she must be taking quite a bit in as there isn't that much mess, but I've yet to give her spaghetti bolognaise so we shall see!! Grin

You sound like you and your DD are doing well!! Keep offering the finger foods, she'll get the hang of it.

I'm glad it all worked out in the end. It sounds like it took to 7mo before your DD gets food. By the way don't worry if your DD became uninterested in her food again. They do that quite often because if teeth, stomach or whatever that makes them feel a bit crappy. They can't tell us what is wrong yet. Just be calm and relaxed and trust that they will eat when they are hungry and willing. Especially now you've seen what she's capable of.

I have found sometimes when my 14mo DD feels a bit down, she prefers me to feed her. It's her normal food, not purees. So if she just sits there not even playing with her food, I would load up a spoon or a fork, and put it in front of her mouth. She will sometimes lean forward and open her mouth. But I never trick her or make a fuss about it. And I only started doing this when shes over 1 yo. It's very strange because at 6mo she won't let me feed her at all! Though admittedly it was mush back them. Now the fork has omelettes, meat, pasta shapes etc.

OneLittleBabyTerror · 15/06/2012 14:47

Oh and it usually takes only about 5-6 spoon/forkful of food, and she will start wanting to feed herself again. She's cheeky isn't it?

if you've got a freezer full of mush, you can still use it!
Grin

give her the mush still frozen (depending on how big the frozen bits are of course) and let her suck it.
or use it as part of a sauce for pasta.

Gina1981 · 20/06/2012 08:59

Just a quick question - how quickly do they progress into actually eating it? Feel like we've been at a stand still for the past week!!

dunno.
and i don't think it matters.

you'll notice when the poo starts changing consistency and it smells different.

Mush spread on toast fingers works quite well as finger foods. My 11 month old will eat anything as long as it's spread on toast. Or tomato based mush and grated cheese makes good mini pizzas.
