Cows milk in cereal for a 7 month old

My 7 1/2 month old has been on solids for about 2 months. Still has at least four 7oz bottles of SMA a day. No allergies in family. Can I use cows milk in his breakfast (porridge, weetabix or baby muesli) instead of SMA? Would be one less bottle to make up in the morning.

I often top his cereal up with cows milk (or double cream if I have any in the fridge) if I haven't made up enough SMA or to cool it down quickly so it's not like he hasn't had it.

I thought it was partly no cows milk (apart from cooking) until 12 months due to not enough iron but he still has loads of milk via bottles so I think it should be fine.

i have done this before. dd3 is 81/2 months and i have used cows milk in cereal when i havent got a bottle made or they are too hot.
think it generally means having no formula and just cows milk before 12 months . a little here and there should be fine ime

I know but I'd like him to have it every morning in his cereal. Means I only have to make up two bottles for nursery instead of three which doesn't sound much but making bottles drives me up the wall (gave up b/f about three weeks ago.)

I used cow's milk in cereal from 6 m...think it's fine if it's been heated.

Racers · 22/02/2006 20:54

It is such a small amount, I think it is fine. I would say that, as I do it! It isn't replacing feeds, and amounts to an ounce or so, I bet?! I take the 'use it for cooking' to include this sort of thing.

Racers · 22/02/2006 20:55

BM why does it have to be heated?

springerspaniel · 22/02/2006 21:03

Yeah. That's kind of what I thought. He is a greedy guts and has about 5oz in his porridge at 8am but still manages to drink an 8oz bottle at 7am. I don't think it needs to be heated.

Don't be worried racers I think I raed that you can use it in cooking (in Birth to Five book) so I just took that to mean that it means heated up. Probably wrong!!

Blimey SS, he likes his porridge! I'm used to the small amounts DD eats! She is tiny though

I think I'll keep giving it unheated unless I hear otherwise

full fat cows milk is perfectly fine with cereal and in cooking/in foods from 6 months as long as you dont give it as a main drink. You can give it whichever way your lo prefers i.e. hot or cold

Racers - sometimes he has 7oz worth! He ate two bananas the other day. He is 7 1/2 months but am about to go out and buy 12-18 month vests as the 9-12 are bursting at the seams! LOL. I was similar percentile as a baby (98th) and am not giant now so guess others will catch up later.
