WEANING - HOW DID U DO IT? my 5 month ds spits out his baby rice and cries hysterically. How can I get him to accept it? It seems like all the other mums at post natal group have it all sorted out.....GRrrrrrrr

I could never get dd to take baby rice, have you tried fruit puree? you can add the baby rice to the fruit to make it less runny.

If your ds is reacting that way to solids, then I would leave it for a few weeks, sound like he is not ready yet. Babies are ready for solids when they show an interest in grabbing food & trying to eat them themselves and can sit up unaided. Sounds like yours still has the toungue thrust reflex if he is spitting food out - there's no point in trying solids before he loses that.

As sazhig says, if he's not enjoying it, don't bother.

I waited until 6 months with DS2, but he went right onto grown-up food. Much less work (ok, a lot more mess), and better for everyone.

I did the same as NQC, and while it might seem as though the other post natal babies are streets ahead of yours now, just wait until they're all 7 months and your little darling is eating toast, while the other babies still having purees. More than makes up for the three months of being treated as a crank!

Who said it was a race???

And who likes baby rice??

mimosa - just leave it a while and then offer something else a bit more delicious

WEANING - Thanks for all your advice, I think I will take my foot off the gas for a while and then try something different, like some yummy purees. I think it may be a little early - but I cant help trying to get to the next milestone ( is that just me?)

No, it's not just you, but it's not a race, as Tiktok says. Why set your baby up to see food as a struggle? They grow up really fast - don't hasten on the next stage.

CorrieDale that is so true! I think people thought I was a crank but now they are amazed at DD eating finger foods, mince/veg/pasta/rice dishes not mashed at all etc.

Take your time and enjoy the simplicity of milk, milk and more milk

Tinker · 22/02/2006 10:18

Agree, leave it. Mine only really got gist of solids at 8 months, just kept her mouth shut before then. Now will eat (when in the mood!) very lumpy food, very little mashing.

CorrieDale · 22/02/2006 14:48

And don't forget the nappies... When you've got used to the BF ones, the ones looking a LOT more like an adult's are a bit of a shock. Whifffyyyyy............
