I suppose this means what do you eat, doesn't it? It's silly as this is ds2, and I did BLW with DS1. But obviously our diet has slipped a little since he was under one, so I'm having to really think about what we're eating each day to limit the salt and sugar, but I'm struggling to find the energy!

It feels as if he's eating a lot of bread (incl pitta bread) at lunch time, although he has rice cakes too, just so there is something I can put stuff on that he can grab hold of. And breakfast is a struggle. I usually have porridge but he doesn't like the "loaded spoon" thing at all at the mo so pretty much no porridge goes in. I've been giving him mini-shredded wheat but I'm aware they are wholegrain and he's not to have too much of that (he has fruit too which goes down well)

I think maybe I'm overthinking it, and I'm sure it's partly second child guilt as with DS1 everything was focussed on him but it can't be like that for him brother.

Any help gratefully recieved!

try those for breakfast, but apart from that i think we just gave dd2 toast and fruit in the morning. i hear ya re diet slippage, but don't forget those mad wee freezer packs of mixed veggies if you're stuck. i was always most keen for them to get their pincer grip so they could get on with the frozen pea hunt.

Thanks Aitch, I'll give them a go. Frozen veg is a stock freezer item in our house! I've been lucky that DS1 eats most things so we've been eating fairly spicy etc stuff for a while so we need to remember to calm that down a bit too, I don't want to make my baby cry!!

I sometimes made English pancakes on a weekend for breakfast which he loved (but never during the week no time).

At lunch and supper mixed frozen veg can be a godsend! Broccoli and Carrot with some unsalted butter was a winner, and frozen mini corn cobs. I could never get DS to eat pasta, but fuseli is easy to grip. I squished Risotto into balls(ish) shapes which he could manage (I did add salt to ours once his was served). If I did sunday lunch I froze a few extra yorkies (made without salt) which would use later cut into strips. Small baked potatoes cut into wedges were brill as well cos he could grip the skin and suck the potato off. I gave natural yoghurt and/or tomato purée/ puréed peas as a dip.

I also made and froze batches of home made chicken and fish fingers (chicken or fish chopped into strips, 3 bowls with flour, egg and breadcrumbs, each piece dunked serially in each bowl and shoved on a baking tray) for a low salt baby supper. Boiled egg cut into strips was another favourite. Any of that helpful? Remnds me just how much work BLW is (I still loved it).

funny thing with us was that dd1 REALLY didn't tolerate spice well but dd2 came along and was mad for it. dd1's six now and only just able to have pepper on her dinner.

zebras · 28/05/2012 20:51

Oh and spinach omlete cut into strips was another winner

zebras · 28/05/2012 20:52

DS loved spices when younger and now won't touch them - very odd

wanderingalbatross · 28/05/2012 21:00

DD gets a lot of potato - either boiled, baked or wedges, which are really easy to cook extra and have another day or two's worth in the fridge and aren't bread. I do the same with veg, cook extra and eat for a couple of days in a row.

Otherwise, omelette, cheese on toast, pancakes, meatballs, pasta in sauce, filled pasta shapes, gnocchi, savoury muffins, fish fingers etc. These are either easy to make, or easy to bulk cook and freeze!

Thanks ladies this is great Smile. I think any type of weaning is work, it's never as easy as just giving them what you're having, though it's got to be easy than making pumpkin and carrot purée!

Breakfast - porridge fingers (sometimes with chopped raisins) or fruity pancakes (made in batches and then thawed individually) or fruit or bread with spread. we had weetabix for the first and last time today, too much mess Blush

Lunch - fruit or bread (depending on what he's had for breakfast) or yoghurt or savoury pancakes (batch cooking again)

Dinner - am cooking my way through the BLW cookbook atm and loving it! and so is DS. we've had frittata, mushroom rissotto, bean salad, carbonara, curry...

Food we do for our 8 month old...

breakfast... porridge fingers with raisins fruit added, yoghurt, fruit, weetabix (just add enough milk to make it into a soft rusk consistency), toast - cheese, homemade mackerel pate, hummus, cream cheese. Scrambled eggs, pancakes, muffins, eggy bread with banana cinnamon and creme fraiche

lunch... dippers (hummus or bean dip or guacamole with veg and pitta sticks) omlette, any kind of sandwich or salad I happen to have, yoghurt, fruit, stir fry leftovers, potato salad, pasta salad, pasta and pesto

Tea/Dinner... anything! pasta is always a hit, baked potato and cheese, chicken or salmon stir fry, risotto, thick soups with bread and cheese, meatballs, meat and veg, frittata, curry, salads...

May be a stupid question but do your dc eat all these things just with finge rs?? Is it not carnage???

zosie24 · 01/06/2012 21:57

It can sometimes get messy, but not always! And you would be surprised at what a baby can manage to eat with just their hands. The way I look at it, it's quicker to just put some of the food I've made myself already on to his highchair tray and deal with the mess, than spend time making purees.

FredFredGeorge · 01/06/2012 22:13

SecretFarleysNibbler By 9 months DD ate all those things without any mess other than mess she chose to make (which can be quite a bit :) ), before that she didn't to drop bits that she scooped down her front and into her bib and quite a bit through the high chair and onto the floor.

But even then it didn't take long to clean up, pick up the big bits from the shower curtain on the floor, shake outside, wipe down. Antilop tray and seat wiped down. Takes a couple of minutes at most, and all the time was saved not having to spoon feed or puree more than made up for it!

nevertoooldforindie · 06/06/2012 20:55

we too are stuck in a bread rut. how do you make the porridge and raisins fingers they sound nice? we did try some gnocchi yesterday went down well

zosie24 · 09/06/2012 15:26

porridge fingers... equal amounts of oats and milk into a small ovenproof dish, add in some raisins and chopped fruit (peaches work well). Bake at 180 for 10-15 minutes. Cut into slices and serve when slightly cooled. They are kind of like milky flapjacks! You can also make them in the microwave, but I can't remember the timings! :)

OlivesTree · 10/06/2012 17:59

My 8 month old LOVES salmon. Salmon fishcakes, steamed and cut in pieces, mixed with veg, whatever. Cannot get enough of it.

Also avocado spread on anything, oatcakes, loads of broccoli trees and her current fave- corn on the cob! Amazing what she can get down without any teeth!

firstpost · 10/06/2012 18:08

Our 10m DS eats us out of house and home :)

For breakfasts its mainly toast, crumpets, fruit or yoghurt, sometimes an ellas breakfast pouch which he squeezes into his mouth.

For lunches we do home made veg nuggets, sweet potato with feta, pitta and cheese or hummus, crumpet pizzas, cheesy potato with broccoli.

For Dinners I rely a bit more on pre-made stuff so tortellini, fishcakes, fishfingers or some pesto chicken, homemade burgers, steamed fish. I try and offer a portion of fruit with every meal too. So far he has eaten everything with gusto but know this could all change as he grows!
