DS has been eating solids for the past 3-4 weeks - a range of purees and baby rice/porridge. He loves the porridge but the baby stuff (Boots) is so expensive and I want to find something cheaper, given how quickly we go through it. Health visitors have recommended giving him Ready Brek or Weetabix, but both contain sugar and salt. Can anyone suggest salt/sugar free alternatives? Someone suggested porridge, but is it a huge faff to make it smooth (he's not on lumps yet)?
Thanks for any tips!

dont know about the no lumps but dd loved rice cispies, weetabix and cornflakes. if u make them with warm milk they do go quite soggy

what about semolina? does that contain sugar/salt.

Also think weetabix do a low salt version.Or shops own seem to have less sugar/salt

I heard you can get some kind of very fine porridge from health food stores - cheaper than baby porridge/rice and comes in big bags - sorry can't remember what its called

ordinary ready brek contains NO added sugar/salt so would be fine to give. Weetabix has very little added salt (about 1/16th gram in half a weetabix) so wouldnt be anything to worry unduly about.

Very fine porridge is available from health food shops. It cooks faster than regular porridge, too. It's called fine-milled oatmeal, I think.

Thanks for tips. Its either porridge or weetabix, and it soudns like enough babies have thrived despite a bit of salt and sugar in the bix. As long as he likes it...

Anabel Karmel also mentions 'Cheerios'

Ordinary Ready brek doesn't have any sugar or salt added. It is a pretty good baby food actually. I'm always surprsed more people don't use it.

Cheerios are used loads in the U.S.A as a snack food mostly for babies/toddlers though I wasn't happy with the list of ingredients in the UK ones so don't use them.

Weetabix is pretty good though it does have a bit of salt/sugar. Shredded wheat also has no sugar/salt - in fact it has nothing but wheat - but I'm not sure the texture would work for most babies . Most other cereals so have quite a lot of sugar/salt added.

Ds had porridge from early on. I used to soak the oats in water overnight and then cook with milk in the morning and this seemed to work ok.
