Ds cried today whilst eating (BLW)

Ds is 6 month today and we've been BLW for 2 weeks. We've been quite experimental as he's taken to it really well and seems to enjoy it alot. Today though, we had tears. Unfortunately I was not home for dinner (looking after my mum whose unwell) so dh gave him dinner. Aparently ds shovelled a whole potatoe wedge into his mouth and very shortly after started screaming. Dh seems to think it was an 'I'm in pain' cry. Said he couldn't settle him in his chair so had to take him out and distract him in the mirror. Said he was very upset. After he'd calmed down they say back to finish dinner. Apparently ds tucked back in straight away but started crying everytime he put food in his mouth/swallowed (dh isn't sure which). Dh said he basically cried all the time he was eating, which was quite distressing.

I'm abit worried. Anyone any ideas what could have caused this? Maybe he swallowed a piece of spud too big for him to comfortably handle? But then why the continued crying? He does have a tendancy to litterally frantically shovel food into his mouth, like he's not been fed for days! I'm trying to not give him a milk feed too close to a meal as he eats less and messes more. But now I'm worried that I'm leaving him too hungry and it's causing him to frantically eat?

So he probably caught his gum or his throat or something and was in pain, he dealt with it well and continued eating even if he was still a bit uncomfortable. That sounds good, it didn't put him off and he cracked on with eating. Good for him, he seems to be doing well.

I really doubt hunger is doing anything about how fast he eats, it's just part of him learning how much food to put in his mouth at a time. DD shoveled food like crazy into her mouth at the same age, regardless of how hungry she was - it's just how she ate. Half of it was then let fall out so she could swallow the rest and then let to all fall out. It was only nearer 10 or 11 months before she started swallowing everything she put in her mouth - not sure if it was her throat getting bigger or she learnt to put less in.

Could also be teething and the food hurt his tooth

Mine used to bite her fingers sometimes, leading to a great deal of wailing.

Thanks for your reasueave Fred. He really does shovel it in so I'm glad he's not the only one!...I think perhaps he's been watching daddy eat to!! Grin

Could possibly have been teething as we were up in the night with suspected teething!

All fine now though!....albite still who eking it in!!!

Too hot? Or yes, a sharp edge caught his gum. I doubt it will put him off potatoes for life! Prob wouldn't setlle as you were not there though (not the usual routine), rather than anything to do with the food.
