when to move on to 6+ milk, when I start weaning?

dd will be six months old in a couple of weeks and over the past day or two I'v given her some baby rice, which she seems to love. She's drinking SMA from birth. When should I move her on to SMA 6months+, when she's been weaning a while, or should I leave her on the gold from birth tin a bit longer?
Thanks

I mean she's drinking the From Birth Sma brand in the gold jar, not that she's been drinking it from birth. She was breastfed for the first couple of months. Not that that's relevant, but anyway!

I swapped my DD over straight away once is started weaning because the tins were on offer. DD didn't even notice! You don't have to switch though if you don't want to, you can just continue with the from birth stuff.

You can leave her on gold tin for as long as you like (I think they recommend cows milk after a year though). 6 months plus is a gimmick by formula manufacture rows - I only used it as packs when out.

I say that as a ff so not having a dig- just that It isn't something you have to buy.

Agree with others, there is no need to swap if your baby is happy on the milk she's on now. Milk from 6 monhts plus was only invented so that the manufacturers could promote baby milk.

As for when to wean, these are the signs you should look for:

1.They can stay in a sitting position and hold their head steady.
2.They can co-ordinate their eyes, hands and mouth so that they can look at the food, pick it up and put it in their mouth, all by themselves.
3.They can swallow food. Babies who are not ready will push their food back out, so they get more round their face than they do in their mouths.

There is some good information on the NHS website and on Mumsnet Both are very useful to read before you start to wean Smile.

So can babies be left on the from birth milk until they're old enough to have cow's milk as their regular milk drink?

lagoonhaze · 18/05/2012 18:11

It's all a marketing con so they can publicise it , discount it and instill insecurities in mothers who worry their baby's may be missing out on vitamins.

Unless there is a massive price difference I wouldn't bother

Yes they can. Agree with lagoon.

First Milk is fine til 12 months. BUT as found when doing clubcard exchange from Tesco, the government prevent any deals been made on first milk so to promote BF. That means not counted in supermarket and high street pharmacy points, offers etc, etc.
I exchanged £15 for £30 in the baby and toddler section at tesco and bought three tubs of Aptamil 3 (6 months+) milk for free!!!
I was going to keep my LO on first milk til 1 year but am switching to Aptamil 3 from 26 weeks onwards because it can be kinder on the pockets.
