weaning 5mo with severe reflux

Ds has reflux (quite severe under consultant) he is not a hungry baby but have been advised to wean now (he is 5 and a half months) as a treatment for his relic. He's already been tried on gaviscon, ranitidine, omeprazole and domperidone. Nothing has worked and since trying to wean him with baby rice, pureed carrot, sweet potato, pear, apple etc he has got much worse with his pain! He is not interested in food at all, takes me ages to feed him probably half an ice cube amount! Didn't have this problem with dd at all but she was hungry baby. I'm thinking he's not ready to wean yet? Going back to consultant Thursday so any ammunition to go with (ie, your experiences) would be great. Hate seeing my ds so uncomfortable :(

Haven't got any experience of reflux but just thought I'd suggest that you have a look in the breast & bottle section as there is a great reflux support thread in there. Can't do links at the moment sorry but it's worth searching for the thread as all the MNers on it have a wealth of experience Smile.

Are you sure it's reflux?! Not colic? Or perhaps something completely different....an allergy or intolerance to something? I would get dc checked physically too maybe for signs of hernia (I've heard of this being mis-diagnosed as reflux, don't panic though it's easily sorted!) signs of this are when baby is sick when he's sitting up as opposed to lying down. My ds has grown out of reflux pretty much at the age of 9 mo....now he's mobile and eating more solids. It will pass, but it's horrible in the meantime. Good luck.xxxxx

My son had quite bad reflux with constant vomiting, although we did see improvement with ranitidine plus gaviscon so better luck than you have had. We were also advised to try weaning early but when we gave him a little pear and baby rice it seemed to five him a very uncomfortable tummy , lots of bringing his knees up and grunting, without any apparent positive effect on the vomiting. We decided he wasn't ready and left it for a couple of weeks, then tried again and it was much better. if you think it's not working then there is no harm pausing a week or two and then trying again, and one thing I know is that reflux takes many forms and there is no one way to handle it that works for everyone (like everything else to do with babies!)

We tried early weaning for my reflux DD, on advice from a nutritionist, it didn't work. Tiny amounts of puréed veg / fruit or baby rice made her extremely constipated. We tried every 3 weeks or so from 4 months, each time she got constipated after a couple of teaspoons for a day or two, so we gave up and went back to milk only. At 7 months we tried yet again and it worked, she didn't get constipated. She quickly improved from this point and began putting on weight and growing. She refused milk altogether at 8 months, the GP said she associated it with pain. So we fed her loads of milky sauces, plain yogurt and cheese. By 10 months, she was fine and a happy baby, which was such a relief.

But like Sarahbanshee says, reflux babies are all different. Good luck with the weaning, reflux is extremely draining and worrying, but babies do grow out of it, sometimes quite quickly.
