Stuff to put on toast?

MegumiEto · 13/05/2012 07:12

8mo DS loves toast. I'd appreciate some suggestions for things to put on it so he gets a variety of flavours etc.

Any reason why he can't try some pate or peanut butter? No allergies in the the family, though his older brother has eczema.

Thanks!

Mashed banana or avocado? Not sure about the pate or peanut thing tho.

SpottyTeacakes · 13/05/2012 07:17

Marmite, cheese, cheese spread, peanut butter should be fine. Afaik anything apart from honey is no problem. Scrambled egg?

thirdfromleft · 13/05/2012 07:23

Giving certain foods to under ones is not recommended, either because their systems are not developed enough to handle them or because they can trigger allergies even without a history. So you should wait under after 1 year for things like cows milk, strawberries, eggs, and yes nuts including peanuts. I personally don't think pâté is a good idea due to the heavy metals that can be in liver.

Avocado and banana are good ideas, you could also try apple sauce, fruit compotes, and maybe some chopped tomato.

Oh dear, he's already had cows' milk and strawberries. I was told cows' milk was fine mixed with food and I didn't know strawberries were more dodgy than any other fruit. He didn't show any reaction to either, does that mean he's ok?

Finding BLW hard going really, I'm not an imaginitive cook and we have quite a limited diet as my husband has IBS. We only have one cooked meal a day so looking for dead easy things DS can have for lunch that preferably don't have to be cooked. I'm working from home at the moment and already up and down every five minutes, don't want to add a ton of washing up to my day.

The idea that you can feed your DC family food kind of presupposes that you have a healthy diet and at the moment, we are eating a lot of convenience food because we're both so busy. Not junk food, just frozen pre prepared stuff we can shove in the oven. I've been doing DS a lot of veg in the evenings mostly, but I can't help feeling as though I should be doing more. Guilt is never far away is it?

There's no reason to avoid peanut butter or pate, or almost anything else spread on toast after 6 months, it was once thought that avoiding common allergenic foods was a good idea, but it's been shown more and more that there's no benefit to this and potentially even increases the likelyhood of negative reactions, although there's no firm evidence. Currently every country I can find is fine with eggs, strawberries, cows milk etc.

Honey is the only thing to avoid.

MegumiEto · 13/05/2012 07:52

Ah yes, knew about the honey thing thankfully! Will carry on because I do love that he is picking the food up and eating it by himself, so much easier than spoon feeding him every mouthful.

Really want to start eating a bit healthier ourselves as soon as my current batch of work finishes at the end of June. Hopefully this will open up his options a bit too.

I was told egg is fine from six months as long as its cooked. Cows milk is also fine in food. Try it and if he suddenly gets a rash or is poorly you will know what to avoid. If there is no history if nut allergy in your family I would have no problem giving peanut butter

thirdfromleft · 13/05/2012 09:06

Interesting, I was repeating what I was told by our pediatrician. In the case of cow milk I was told the reason we should wait was that it contains proteins that can't be digested in baby tummies. Maybe this is no longer true.

My DS loves marmite!

Quotationist · 13/05/2012 09:13

My 7 mo DD loves mashed tinned sardines, cheese on toast, toast soaked in soup, hummous etc. It's also currently the only way she'll eat bananas!

midori1999 · 13/05/2012 10:11

Thirdfromtheleft, are you in the USA? Advice there is different to the UK. After 6 months, you are only advised to avoid honey and undercooked eggs in the UK.

My DD loves cream cheese on toast.

If you're struggling for dinner ideas and want to make your DS something more healthy than you'd eat, pasta is easy and quick to make healthily and you could make a bolognese sauce or simila in advance and freeze individual portions. I often do my DC pasta if I'm feeling lazy, cook the pasta, drain and mix in some olive oil, cherry tomatoes and grated cheese or a quick sauce by frying some peppers, courgette etc and garlic, adding a carton of pesto and reducing a bit and you can add some cream cheese to the sauce too, or some cooked chicken etc.

Janoschi · 13/05/2012 16:12

We do:

Sardines on toast
Peanut butter on toast
Banana on toast
Soft cheese on toast
Pate on toast
Cheese on toast

Also (like today) we get out our sandwich stuff (rolls, butter, cream cheese, beef slices, pate, cherry toms etc) and give DD the same as us but separately on her plate. So she gets the lettuce and the tomatoes (cut in half), a few bits of roll smeared with pate or cheese, maybe a sliced olive or something.

The ready-made tortellini from the supermarket chiller cabinet is dead quick and easy for your kiddy to hold. We get the spinach one and smear a tiny bit of pesto in it. It's DD favourite thing. Can also cook a fair amount and eat it cold.

Fishfingers are easy. DD likes picking up the peas we serve with it. Pincer grip skills and all that!

Spiral pasta with tomato-based sauce is easy too. Can make a few servings, keep it in a tupperware pot and microwave a bit at a time.

Oh, how about quiche? Cut into chunks and served cold.

Janoschi · 13/05/2012 16:12

DD is 12 months btw. But has been doing this since 6-7 months.

Flisspaps · 13/05/2012 16:18

Everything bar honey, whole nuts (peanut butter is fine) and whole grapes (which you'd have a job to balance on toast) is fine Smile

Flisspaps · 13/05/2012 16:20

Have you looked at www.babyledweaning.com for ideas?

FredFredGeorge · 13/05/2012 17:06

midori1999 I don't believe the US advice is to avoid allergenic foods, I understood the current advice came from the reporthere which says

^"5.3.4. Timing of Introduction of Allergenic Foods to Infants
Guideline 40: The EP suggests that the introduction of solid foods should not be delayed beyond 4 to 6 months of age. Potentially allergenic foods may be introduced at this time as well."^

Certainly the old advice was.

Janoschi · 13/05/2012 17:22

Flisspaps - oh, we enjoy the grapes on toast thing. I like to punish DD if she lets any roll off too. Makes mealtimes more fun for me.

metalelephant · 13/05/2012 18:26

I'd avoid marmite as its ridiculously salty. Which is probably why it's the food of the gods.
