Doe this sound ok? Balanced diet/reduced milk worries!

Hi all

We are about 8 weeks in to blw, ds is just coming up to 8 months. He is loving his food, but I am really paranoid about whether he is getting a balanced diet, particularly as over the last few days I am sure he is taking less milk (breastfed)

He doesn't have breakfast yet but I will be introducing that when he is 8 months. So for example, yesterday he had:

Lunch - most of a large fishcake, a lot of butternut squash, some roast potato, a large bit of pinapple and a yoghurt
Tea - 2 cheese and spinach muffins, a bit of brioche, 3 strawberries and fruity rice pot thing.

Today he has had

Lunch - pitta bread with grated cheese and apple, large bit of pineapple, yoghurt
Tea - roast chicken, a brioche roll, 3 strawberries and a fruity rice pot thing (he had a very late nap so dinner was a bit rushed!)

(fruit is repetitive just because we have the same for a couple of days in a row so it doesn't end up just getting thrown away! He generally loves a variety of fruit)

Bf wise, he probably has 4-5 feeds during the day, and still wakes up at least 2-3 times at night and I feed him then. He is definitely taking less though, and is less interested. He pulls off a lot more, and sometimes just takes a few sucks and turns away. I try and feed him an hour or so before solids.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance Smile

Sorry, I meant to add I know food is supposed to be fun before one, so I can't help but be concerned about how he already seems to be reducing his milk.

Oh yes, and he also had some tomato with his lunch today but didn't seem to keen - I think he prefers fruit to veg. ( I know tomato is a fruit but you know what I mean!)

Sounds ok to me. Milk is supposed to be their main source of nutrition until 12 months I think.

DD2 has also started blw (6 months now) and she's similar in terms of food (though she takes less food than yours). She's also bf on demand and wakes up several times a night.

You could try adding broccoli florets, carrots, hummus, avocado, strips of melon, squashed blueberries, raspberries? And maybe using milk in the breakfast when you start giving porridge/cereal? Baby porridge tends to have a lot of vitamins and minerals.

Just give him lots of variety, he's probably taking less because he needs less (ie he's not going through a big growth phase at the moment) as opposed to anything to do with the food he's eating. He seems to be eating well, he's controlling what he eats, so relax and let him control - unless you have any health worries, his diet sounds good from the snapshot.

He loves melon and blueberries, he hasn't had raspberries yet! He has tried broccoli, carrots, hummus, avocado - I don't think he is overly fussed by them although I did make some carrot muffins that he loved! I think I have an over reliance on cheese in his food (bit of a cheese fiend myself!) I use full fat milk in his food when required and am planning on doing the same for his breakfast - it would probably be better for me to express but I am not a fan and would like to avoid if possible.

I think its that fact that he is definitely taking less milk from me that is worrying me the most, and I'm just concerned as to whether he is getting a sufficiently good diet for that to be ok......Confused

Sorry crossed posts Fred, no, no health concerns at all, he is happy and chubby, nappies fine etc. Perhaps just paranoid firsttimemumitis.... Smile

As long as he's taken a variety of foods, and putting on weight, I wouldn't worry! Have (messy!) fun with it Smile
