Gaining lots of weight on full fat milk

I wasn't sure where to post this but hopefully this is the right place.

Basically 13mth old DD moved onto cows milk at a year and now seems to be gaining lots of weight and her little pot belly is growing by the day! She eats 3 good meals a day and has 3 milks a day. Normally around 15oz a day. She's walking a very mobile and I just don't know why her thighs are suddenly chunky and tops are too small for her. Is this normal? Is she getting too much milk/ food. I thought they lost weight when they starting walking but she's doing the opposite. Was 75 percentile for weight at 1 year so not huge at all, but just concerned about sudden change in her bulk and can only assume is related to milk change. Any suggestions as to what to do?

Do you think her tummy is growing or bloated? It could be milk intolerance if bloated or something else in her diet - wheat?

Otherwise, I'd say it was a normal growth spurt.

Have her feet grown - a good way to tell if it's a growth spurt.

She'll lose it - might suddenly have gained her appetite which should balance itself out soon enough.

full fat milk is only about 4% fat so unlikely to be a cause of weight gain. What sort of amounts/types of food is she having?

Thanks for suggestions. I think her tummy is growing rather than bloated though not sure exactly how to tell for sure?? Interestingly her feet have grown in last 6 weeks as she's into new socks.
Wrt diet I haven't changed anything apart from milk type and she's actually having less milk than before. She has cereal, porridge, crumpets, eggy bread or toast with fruit for breakfast. Lunch might be mini pitta sarnies with philly, salmon, humous etc. cheese on toast or quiche with beans or veg. Dinner normally make annabel carmel receipe such as liver, veal, meatballs, haddock etc with veg or maybe pasta, pesto and salmon. Or perhaps salmon fingers and lentil croquettes and veg. DH and I enjoy making meals for DD and the freezer is full of stuff for her! If she hasn't had fruit with a meal I give her a snack of fruit mid-afternoon, alternatively home made banana bread or shop bought baby oat bar.
She's very active and sleeps well.

I bet it's just a growth spurt then. Sounds like it and her diet sounds fab!

DS2 is 17 months and has been on formula up until 4 weeks ago as he was premature and still tiny so I thought it best to get as many calories into him as possible...in the 4 weeks he has been on full fat cows milk he has put on a lb which is practically unheard of-it took him 3 months to gain 6 oz so a lb in a month is nothing short of a miracle for him. He's eating exactly the same amount of food and perhaps drinking a tiny bit more of the cows milk as he seems to like it a bit better so can only assume it's helped him put on a little weight!

Formula usually has around 3.5g of fat per 100ml, Follow on formula usually has around 3g of fat per 100ml but full fat cow's milk is usually 4% fat so has slightly more fat than formula/follow on (and loads more than the toddler milks as they have around 1.9-2.8% fat which is semi-skimmed levels which in contrast to human milk is pretty low as human milk has around 11% fat post 12m)

Wow truthsweet...I honestly didn't know that! He's been on Toddler Formula since he was one as I thought it'd get more calories into him as he's so dinky...I checked the calories per 100ml and they are about the same but didn't think to check the fat content! That would explain why he's finally managed to put on some weight at last!! Thank you! x

If she's on 3 good meals a day (inc lots of cheese) plus about 14oz of milk at the minute plus vitamin drops and in high percentiles for both weight and height is there any reason not to give semi- skimmed milk occasionally?

If it's in a cheese sauce then I don't see why not (would be fat in the cheese and the butter used to make it) or other cooking where there is fat from other sources but if it's just as a drink I personally wouldn't (unless it's an emergency/all you have left in the house!).

DowagersHump · 18/05/2012 17:15

There are vitamins in FF milk that aren't in semi-skimmed. Honestly, I really wouldn't worry about it. She will suddenly shoot up I bet. :)
