Total rejection of all savoury foods - AHHH

Hello all,
The feeding difficulties with my DS (10mo) continue. He is on the 0.4th centile with cows milk dairy allergy and has had pretty poor growth all the way through. I weaned at just before 5mo with a combo of purees and BLW and it seemed to go well. He generally has eaten a good range of foods, although in varying quantities on different days. He is still BF when I am available or has a soya based prescription milk from bottles at nursery or from Dad when I am at work.

The last 2 weeks he has suddenly started rejecting all savoury foods and finger foods generally. We had a little phase of this a few mths ago but it only lasted a short timea nd he was still eating well. Last 4 days he has rejected everything but soya yogurts, fruit purees, dairy free 'ice-cream' and grapes. Just screaming and pushing away anything else as soon as he sees the bowl. I have tried putting main meals in yogurt pots but he was too canny for that!!

There are various reasons I am worried about this:

  1. Although I know milk should be his main food source until 1, he is coming up to that and things will need to change!
  2. I want him to have as healthy and balanced a diet as possible
  3. He is so tiny already I don't want him to reduce his intake

Any advice? SHould I just give him what he wants? Should I offer a savoury course (which is always wasted) and endure the screaming?

Thanks

Oh dear, poor you, it must be very worrying. I must admit to chuckling when you said he rejected savoury food from yogurt pots - he's clearly on the ball. How does he seem in himself? I do think there is something to be said for them generally being their usual selves, if he seems ok then perhaps try not to worry quite as much whilst you figure out what will work for him. Do try to bear in mind that it could well be just another phase.

What type of savoury things are you giving him? Could you make some savoury muffins to convince him they are sweet pudding type things? How about sweetcorn pancakes? I would definitely trying sweet looking things with veg in! I would also stick to sweet type savoury items for a while, e.g. carrots, squash and sweetcorn. When I was little my mum just to make baked beans, hard boiled eggs, chopped cucumber and tomatoes, I know it sounds revolting but I loved it (still do). Maybe your LO might be so confused by what it is he might eat it?

Thanks for your reply. I'm now wondering if it is teething or something and it is that he doesn't want to chew anything. He usually loves lots of diff finger foods and isn't keen at all currently. He has been eating several yogs per day and not much else!
He has a good range of all types of standard main courses - pasta, risottos, stews, meat/fish etc. Anything we are having (if suitable for dairy free) or from a jar or I make up batches of annabel karmel recipes and put them in the freezer. The only foods he doesn't have currently are dairy due to the allergy, eggs and nuts. Was planning on introducing the two latter things at a year.

I might try the savoury muffin idea...see if it works. He used to scoff down vast bowls of most savoury foods.

I am seeing the health visitor tomorrow so I will ask her for some further advice!

I'd check his mouth too and if you think he is teething give him some ibruprofen and a teething gel like dentinox.

I wouldn't worry too much about reducing his milk intake yet either. 12 months is a bit of a way away and if you are worried about his weight there's loads of calories in the milk.
