Weaning with a cows milk allergy

DS2 (6mths in a couple of days) has a milk allergy and has recently been put onto nutramigen 1 formula. He has also been referred to a paediatric dietician and we are currently waiting for an appt to come through. I have in the last couple of weeks started to wean him as he was showing all the signs of wanting more than milk. However, now that we have actually started giving him some food he seems totally disinterested in it. I have so far tried homemade carrot, sweet potato, mango and pear purre's and he doesn't seem to like any of it! I have tried mixing the fruit with some rusk and he seems a bit happier with that but he is definately not what I would call enthused. And as for the veg he gags on it as soon as I put it in his mouth. Was starting to think it was my cooking but have this morning tried him on a 'plum' breakfast pouch and he hated that too. The only thing he seems to be happy to eat is mashed banana!! Just wondering if anyone can suggest any tasty but healthy homemade recipes we could try him on which are either milk free or in which we could use his 'special milk'. Please help as I am really starting to regret trying to wean before we saw the dietician :(

My ds also has a dairy allergy. When he was around the age of your ds we had most success with things like homemade hummous, lentil-based dishes like khichri or sambhar, ratatouille, chocolate pudding, small pasta shapes with tomato or pepper sauces (or use some of the hummous to make a hummous pasta sauce).

You can still do things like rice pudding or porridge using your formula or a milk substitute like oatmilk or soya - I bf so mostly used expressed bm, but used alternatives if it was something we could all eat! He also had a lot of finger food.

Most of the recipies come from Carol Timperley's Baby & Child Vegetarian Recipies book - quite a lot of the recipies use milk or yoghurt but are really easy to adapt - and you don't have to be vegetarian! A lot of stuff in it is suitable for the whole family, so we are still using it now.

The other thing is whether you've thought about blw? It didn't work for us but many think it is great, and might be worth having a look at.

Dannid, when you see the dietician, ask for the nutramigen recipe booklet.
Don't worry too much if lo isn't interested in food yet, milk (nutramigen) is everything they need for now. Don't move onto #2 until they've taken reasonably well to eating food & are happily eating three proper little meals a day. Just read the labels on anything you intend to give lo, milk gets into the strangest things sometimes!
My dietician gave me a list of names that milk can be called by, even better it was on a credit-sized laminated card so it was always in my purse!
It does get easier & you will cope!
