Hello!
Im about to start weaning (eeeek) and my little one has reflux so is on SMA staydown. It states on the tin not to add thickeners - does this include baby rice?! I asked HV but they were useless!! Any advice muchly appreciated :-)

Are you thinking of adding the rice to the bottle Emma? Did you know its a choking hazard to put anything other than the milk in a bottle?

If your LO has reflux you might find asking about weaning on this thread helpful too. There are some very wise and avid MNers on that one Smile.

Forgot to mention, if you are thinking of giving your LO baby rice, have a read of this first.

MadameChinLegs · 24/04/2012 20:21

I really do not think its advisable these days to add anything to their bottles.

How old is your DC?

I am thinking about when to start weaning (DD is 18 weeks, and her doc has given me the go ahead to start whenever we feel ready) but think it will be another month or so.

I really dont want to give baby rice as it seems bland, textureless and just dul dull mush. Im hoping to offer both mashed veg and sticks of stuff for her to gnaw on (shes putting everything in her mouth and chewing it as her teeth are starting to cut).

If you really want to give rice, give it seperatley to the bottle, and after a feed, as little babies really should get all of their calories from milk and any food is 'extra'

I read somewhere "food is fun until their one" (may well have been on here) which is helping me when thinking about weaning. There doesnt look anything fun about baby rice.

Dd was on sma staydown, tbh I would doubt it will flow through the teat.

Why do you want to put baby rice in the bottle?

MissPenteuth · 25/04/2012 10:25

If you mean making up baby rice in a bowl, but using formula, I don't see the harm. We did similar (not staydown though, just regular SMA).

I know baby rice looks like wallpaper paste, but we tried it as one of DD's first foods as a way of introducing a more "solid" texture without too strong a taste. You can also add a bit of yogurt of fruit puree to it for flavour.

Hi ladies
Thank u for your comments! i dont think i worded it very well! I wasnt planning to add rice in the bottle - i was going to mix a little formula in a bowl with some baby rice. I was worried as the SMA staydown is normal consistency until it reaches the stomach, then it thickens, so was wondering if the rice would do any harm in the stomach as it would make the formula even thicker!
Firstlasteverything, I am going to start vegetables soon, but understood baby rice should be used first?!? Am 1st time mum so noooo idea lol !

Ah right get you now Smile

I used cow milk and not the staydown as it went all lumpy.

You don't need to start of with baby rice

Emmalovesshoes · 25/04/2012 11:48

ahh.. excellent! thank u!! Yes I did see the link - thank u :-)
We'll get there in the end!! Ive just ordered annabel karmel (?) to learn more about weaning and food to use!!
Having seen the negative comments re baby rice - think ill start on puree of some sort instead!!! :-)

Perosnally I'm not a big fan of purees or Annabel Karmel. I've weaned 2DC, one with purees and one with Baby Led Weaning (BLW). Purees are much harder, it takes you ages to make them and then they eat about 1 icecube and it takes ages.

Not saying that you should do BLW but it might be helpful to read up on it before you start. There is a great website here and this book is supposed to be very good. Haven't read it though, DC2 decided to do BLW by herself when she ate a sandwich at 23 weeks. Much, much easier than purees Smile.

MN has some good information on weaning too, here.

Thank u so much for your advice - will chekout your links! I havent looked into baby led weaning but might be a good option!
