mango and constipated? 5 month old

dd is 5.5 months and has been weaning for last 3 weeks - as advised by HV.

I have given her mango for last 4 meals and has just done one small hard poo after a day with no poo. What should I do?

please - any advice?

First, I'd stop with the solids, if they're causing problems. Your HV is behind the times if she's advising weaning now.

Second, how much mango is she eating? Is she bf or formula-fed? Have her poos just now gone wrong? Mango is quite high in fibre.

gingernutlover · 06/02/2006 13:15

Its not solids in particular - just the mango. She has had 3 or 4? meals of it so far (2 icecubes a meal. Here poos had been fine on carrot, pear, swede and pear&apricot.

I am happy weaning her and believe it is right for her for several reasons so don't want to stop but would welcome any advice on how to deconstipate? She is bottle fed and takes only 20-25oz a day if we are lucky (this is not since the solids BTW)

She is on cow and gate hungry baby formula ATM and I wonder if she would be better going back to the first milk now she is on solids. I was never that thrilled with the chnage to hungry baby anyway.

Yes, maybe the change in formula and the fact she's trying new foods has had something to do with it.

Some babies do have a reaction with different fruits. I'm sure I was told about Mango and Pineapple.

Also you could try her with some water with her meals.

NotQuiteCockney · 06/02/2006 13:48

How long ago did you change her formula? And how many meals does she have per day?

Hungry Baby formula isn't Stage 2 or whatever they call it, with iron in it, is it? That often causes constipation.

To deconstipate, offer cooled boiled water, or give prunes.

mcnoodle · 06/02/2006 14:18

Gingernut - my ds (8 months) had similar probs (caused by banana). I bought a tin of prunes (in juice not syrup), took stones out and wizzed the whole lot up, then froze into ice cube trays. He has one in his breakfast cereal most days. Keeps him regular and full of iron too.

Keep offering water, even if most of it gets spat out. She will start to accept it eventually. It's taken ds a good couple of months, but he now slurps away happily. Offer it to her after a nap or while she is happy and distracted with a toy.

If it carries on talk to hv or gp. They can prescribe lactulose. Obviously better and easier for you if you can sort it out with diet.

thanks

I have tried water before with no success - ie she would not have it but will keep pluggin away as I don't really want to start juice. Maybe not in a bittle though perhaps a tommee tippee cup would be better think I was givne one a while back.

She is on breakfast and has just started tea BTW and will check whether the formula has iron.

My dd had a few probs after a couple of weeks of solids. I soaked dried prunes in boiled water, then gave her some of the water by squeezing it in her mouth with a dropper (she takes vitD this way so didn't mind.) That seemed to help. I wizzed the soggy prunes up in a blender and froze them.

I found things just settled down themselves after another couple of weeks. Does she seem uncomfortable? My dd would only go twice a week and seemed fine except a little crying as she pooed. My doc said not to worry unless causing discomfort. She is now going everyday and I did nothing different, think it just takes a while for their systems to adjust.

gingernutlover · 06/02/2006 15:52

thanks - she has just had some brocolli which she loved daddy will be surprised! I heard this acts as a "clearer outer" so lets hope it works. She liokes playing with the tommee tippee cup and tries to put the spout in her mouth so I will keep offering an oz or 2 of water after solids in that I think.

She doesn't seem out of sorts so I think I will just see how things go. I am going to start a thread on this which can constipate/unconstipate if anyone wants to add to it. thought it might be useful lovely subject

Do try to mix Red/Yellow or Red pepper with other veggies, I am not sure why it works but my little nephew (he is now 9 months old) was very constipated (5 days sometimes without a poo!!!). They came to visit and we shared my baby's food (containing sweet peppers), the day after he managed to fill more than 1 nappy... and now my sister make sure that he has sweet peppers few times a week... and she still says that it works wonder!!! So try it and let me know.

forevermore · 06/02/2006 17:46

jiust going through this with 26 week old. not sure what is is, but have also just introduced mango, however she has it on week 3 of weaning too and had not had mango then??

i have been weaning for about 6 weeks now, and since recent constipation she has stopped wanting solids these past two days??? i think she may be a bit bunged up? or this is just a phase?

she also never has more than 20oz/day and this was never more than 25ozs before weaning

gingernutlover · 06/02/2006 18:25

the brocolli worked a treat - just had a big dirty nappy (on daddy's watch too - result!)

Butternut squash is a miracle worker too in case it happens again and sweet to taste, nice to have often to keep them regular!!!

gingernutlover · 08/02/2006 09:13

thanks forthe suggestions I have butternut squash in the freezer so wil try her on that soon. Just a Q tho do you need to cook the peppers first? I assume you de skin them too?

OP posts:
sunshinebaby · 20/02/2006 11:05

Roast the peppers under the grill... until the skin gets a little black then the skin should come off very easily. Mix them with baby corn, courgettes and a baby potatoe... My baby loves it and don't get constipated..Good luck.
