Rice Cakes. OMG just bought DS some rice cakes from Asda with apple flavouring, he's been sucking on one for a good 20 mins without a peep! Crazy! There quite expensive though, I eat the big plain unsalted Kalo rice cakes with stuff on top, is there anything I can put on these that is suitable for tiny ones? So much cheaper to do it that way and break them up!

My DD has the unsalted adult ones with toppings like peanut butter (I buy no added sugar/salt one), cream cheese, avocado, banana, jam (sugar free) etc

My dd loves these too, I have been weaning with purees but dd has started refusing them as she wants to feed herself. The solution is to spread absolutely anything on a rice cake and she will eat it! Bits of pitta bread also work well (and are cheaper)

Wait until you discover the effect of pizza crusts... :)

Hummus is good on a rice cake. It's also a good way to use up the ends of baby food jars (I use them when we're out but DS is often too distracted to eat it all - I use the rest spread on something the next day).

WizzyBizzy · 01/04/2012 22:32

We use the Kalo unsalted ones - I break into quarters (DS is 2.4 and still has these as a frequent snack).

There is such a think as jam with no sugar??!?

ginhag · 01/04/2012 22:34

Mushed up banana and cinnamon.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 01/04/2012 22:35

You can often get them at Poundland and Wilkinsons :)

They are worth their weight in gold!!

You don't need to put anything on them, the plain ones are fine :) Just watch the salt/sugar on any not designed for babies.

BelinaTheChicken · 01/04/2012 22:40

You can get a jam type thing made from concentrated pears and apples. Think there is a prune one too, DS1 loved it on rice cakes, and is basically what the packet ones have, only a lot stickier and an unattractive brown, so any smears look a bit suspicious! I got it in a health food store, will try to find a link

BelinaTheChicken · 01/04/2012 22:43

Can't link on phone, but it's made by Suma, and is 100% fruit

notcitrus · 01/04/2012 22:45

The low salt breadsticks are fab too.
Especially when a bit older and some breadsticks and a pot of hummus keep an active toddler still for an hour...

Graciescotland · 01/04/2012 22:53

There's a french brand of sugar free jam called St Dalfour in most supermarkets it's sweetened with concentrated grape juice. It's really nice.

DS used to love cream cheese on his ricecakes.

LivinginFrance · 03/04/2012 09:02

Yes discovered this a week ago. Bliss! Will try the flavored ones. DD now refuses all specially made baby biscuits but will eat any of the ones we do, including baguettes, croissants and pain au chocolate.

ChunkyPickle · 03/04/2012 09:05

I was recently subjected to the horror of DS wanting to share his marmite flavoured rice-cake....

autumnchild · 03/04/2012 09:13

My DD adores these - she has peanut butter, humous, guacamole (sp?) and anything else on them couldn't think of anything worse myself

candr · 06/04/2012 21:00

Never thought to put anything on them. Ds loves sucking his but it does make them stick like glue to anything. Can't stand the smell or taste myself but as he likes them will put up with it.
