My DS i ff and currently on 2 bottles and will basically eat anything. When we get to 12 months whats the minimum amount of formula/ cows milk he should have. I read somewhere I think ages ago it was 300ml or 350ml (i can't remember) but ive tried googling and I can't find whats recommended?

I was told that 18oz is about right. i.e. 2x 9oz bottles is perfect.

My dietician told me its the amount of calcium as a total you need to look at, not necessarily the numer of bottles.
This link is essentially what she gave me in paper format last week.

This page says Children between the ages of one and three need to have around 350mg of calcium a day. About 300ml of milk (just over half a pint) would provide this.

You dont need to give it in drink form as you could get the same nutrients from other sources, other dairy e.g. yoghurt, cheese, etc

This link says at least 300 ml. Don't forget that you need to dump the bottles once DS gets to 12 months too see here.

Sorry, first link didn't work properly. Have a read of this instead Blush.

Thankyou, have already ditched baby bottles and use a tommee tippee free flow for morning milk and born free drinking cup for bed time, looking to move over to tommee tippee in the evening fairly soon.

Unrelated to OP but: ShockShock 1250mg for breastfeeding! I don't think a day has gone by since DS was born that I would've actually had anywhere close to that... maybe it's time for a calcium supplement.

rrreow · 29/03/2012 14:46

1250mg of calcium that is, from the PDF that hwhite6 linked. Sorry.. am in shock and slightly worried my bones have been disintegrating over the past 10 months.. (I jest but only partly..)

JiltedJohnsJulie · 29/03/2012 14:49

rreow no need to suppliement a bf baby if the quantities don't match cow's milk or ff. As your baby grows your milk changes. At birth your milk will be 4% fat, by the time they're one it will be 11% fat so unlike babies fed on other millk there is no need to inrease the quantity, your body is making sure you baby gets what it needs all by itself Smile.

Have you read this?

Seona1973 · 29/03/2012 15:52

I think rreow means that she should have been taking the extra calcium, not the baby

rrreow · 29/03/2012 16:57

Yes I meant myself.. the pdf linked above suggests you need 1250mg of calcium a day when you're breastfeeding... At least I don't have to feel so guilty every time I get a latte from Starbucks :o (decaf, mind you - getting DS to sleep is hard enough)

hwhite6 · 29/03/2012 21:23

rrreow, at least seeing that pdf the other week made sense as to why they made me take 2x600mg Ca tablets when I had to go dairy-free to continue bf ds2 when he was little; although they never mentioned the 1250mg bit at the time!
